Locks by itselfGLENThe locking mechanism to control the leash length somtimes locks by itself causing too much leash for the position of the dog and thus allowing it to get tangled in the dogs legs.2
Very goodSALLYLove this dog leash. Retracts good without tangling or getting stuck. It would be nice if the made the casing a little smaller.4
Our leash was in needStaciOur leash was in need of an upgrade. This one is pretty light weight and I love that it has a spot to hook our doggy bags onto.5
Tricky to useJULIANA R.Well built but the clip is hard to manage onto the collar ring, and since its plastic we don't trust its strength over time. Should be ok for a very small dog. The leash button is also tricky to engage and doesn't offer a short-stop (our old version you could press the button but not lock it for short control periods). Will be replacing sadly.2
Works as expectedCjcraig68Works as expected, just wish it was 20ft instead of 15 feet4
Works better than most retractable leashesAnnaSmithThe button that stops the leash from extending further works really well, better than most. We also like that it has a loop where you can connect a container for waste bags.5
GreatJodiedeeGreat leash I'm going to get another one!!5
Not my favorite!SimplifymeThis leash was $15 and isn’t very easy to use. It got stuck a lot & my puppy kept getting wound up in it.2

BrianwoodturnerRound leash was a great swivel system, great design wish I bought two4
DisappointedSHL21Hate to give a negative review because I love Ikea. However, we were very disappointed with this retractable leash. It doesn't retract very well and seems a bit flimsy.1
Much improved dog leashSuzanne172The previous retractable dog leash I bought from ikea had an odd catch button. This leash has changed that so I can easily extend and retract the leash. My pup likes it too.5
Good qualityAda12I bought this for my dog and it feels so smooth when you lock and unlock the safety. It feels nicely made and has a nice Lenght. All in all a nice product5
ownerbobbyvlurvig retractable leash really good product.5
Not strong enoughTrezure54We used this for our lab/hound mix for about a week until he ran off to chase another rabbit. I tried the lock mode before it reached the end of the rope, but the cord still broke. Luckily after calling his name, I heard him running back with the cord dangling from the harness ring.2
Very sturdy...a little expensiveIreneyWish it had a ribbon type retractable cord/ leash. The thinner type like this , can give you a burn if your doggie wraps around your leg ! Other than that ....great !4
Love itvic31I’ve had it for about 2 weeks now. No issues. Works great. Hope it last a long while!5

Made for our four legged family members

"I feel that my pets are the ones who can really take me to the present moment. When we share our time together, my head is more free and other worries and stress fall away. They teach us respect, and their unconditional love is priceless."

If you're a pet owner, designer Inma Bermudéz's words might be something that rings true to you too. After all, our pets give us a lot, from that wagging tail that welcomes us home, to that calm company next to us on the sofa, or that unconditional love at every other time. If you ask us we figure it’s time to give them something back. That's why we brought in Inma to work on the LURVIG range, which is designed to help out all aspects of life with our dogs and cats. Not to mention be long lasting and affordable, while fitting in with your existing home furnishings. As Inma says: "Our pets have their own personalities but they have five things in common: they love sleeping, eating, playing and exercising and being close to us. So these behaviors have been the first thing on our minds when designing these products."

Designing from a pet's perspective

Of course designing products for pets rather than humans has its own set of rules and things to consider. To help out, the LURVIG range was developed with the assistance of trained veterinarian Dr Barbara Schäfer, who also works with product risk assessment at IKEA. Barbara has an extensive background working with pets from hamsters and rats all the way up to dogs and cats. She says the biggest challenge is not to "humanize" pet products. "It's really important to use animal’s natural needs and behaviors like how they sleep, eat or play as a starting point. Then we can design a product that fits in with our "human needs" such as style and form." The first thing to consider was safety: "Dogs will definitely chew on their toys and bring in dirt from their daily walks. Cats will definitely scratch on most surfaces and are sensitive to smell and texture. So safe, durable materials are very important." As well as looking at animal behaviors like eating. "Cats are generally good at regulating how much food they eat, however a number of dog breeds still retain the desire to overeat. That's how the "slow feed" bowl became part of the LURVIG range. By using a design that breaks up a bowls internal surface area, it prevents the dog from being able to inhale their food in one or two gulps."

Matching human design with pet design

How often when watching your pet do they go for the same toy or blanket and return to a cozy spot to chew or maybe just have nearby as a comfort? Rounding out the LURVIG design process was the focus that our pet's live with us at home as part of the family — even if they do take the odd shoe or two. For Inma, that led to a friendly smelling bed. "The piece that I'm most proud of is a pet cushion that we encourage owners to fill with their old clothes, blankets or towels. The idea’s that pets get a comfortable cushion with comfortable, familiar smells too." The LURVIG range also matches with some IKEA classics, like a cat bed that fits perfectly into a KALLAX shelving unit and a pet sized version of a sofa bed that matches our human sized ones. Final words though go to Inma to sum up their ambition of the range. "I share my life with three dogs and I've always missed nice pet products at an affordable price. As an animal lover I’m proud and happy to be part of this project. I would love it if it inspired people to spend more quality time with their pets."
