Making new lights and new friends, too
For many children, a night light is a loyal friend to turn to for company and comfort during dark nights. Our previous night lights were loved, but we always want to improve. So, when creating LURIGA, we chose recyclable materials and used more white light than colors. We asked ourselves what else we could do. Perhaps tell a story?
We brought in ABOVE, a Swedish design and technology agency. They examined night lights and interviewed parents who had them. "We wanted an even more useful light that children could interact with, without it being a toy," ABOVE designer Casper Asmussen says. "We wanted adults to be able to tell kids a story about the light, too." But how?

Shaping a classic couple

A story needs characters. The team made clay forms of six friendly animals that would light up well and stand up nicely. One designer's niece tested that they all fit child-sized hands. Then, kids at daycares were interviewed to see which they liked best. The raccoon was their favorite. The hedgehog became its companion. "They felt like a classic couple, like Tom and Jerry," Casper says.

Gently pulsating light creates calm

A story needs feeling, too. And so, the team created a story about what friends do best—radiate security. Once on, an extra press on the raccoon's head starts a tiny red heartbeat—just like the hedgehog's body pulses green from another press on its back. The calming rhythms remind of a parent's heartbeat. "There's comfort without waking up an adult," Casper says.

Better—and safe—nights for kids and adults

Children’s products need special attention to detail. "It's a fun challenge to design for kids," Casper says. "The safety requirements mean something, and you have to get it right." We think the teamwork behind LURIGA LED night lights led to better ideas—and hope our friends lead to better nights for kids and adults, too.
