Basically stain repellentAnne H.I have 5 kids. They are not tidy when they eat. Tired of constant fussing over tablecloths, I bought 6 of these. Best choice ever! After a meal I shake off crumbs, spray with laundry stain pretreater (Charlie's), and throw in the wash pile until I have a full load of whites. Due to the color stains and spills are easy to spot! Once I've got my load, I wash in the hot "sanitize with Oxi" cycle with oxygen bleach. They come out spotless every time. They are a little wrinkled when they first go on sometimes but the wrinkles aren't very noticeable and they fall out as the day goes on. The pattern is attractive. Could they be thicker? Yes. But I won't argue for the price and ease of care. I only wish there was something so easy to wash and switch out for UNDER the table!5

Excellent price!Kathleen B.I actually bought this to drape over a piece of furniture that I plan to slipcover in white so I see what it would look like first. I may also use it to draft the pattern since it’s cheaper than muslin. And if I never get around to it I’ll still have a nice tablecloth!5

Product Details & Instructions InconsistentJustMeOverHereI hesitatingly bought several of these for my family of five children, along with a non-slip pad (good thing, as the polyester material does slide very easily on my table), to help my children improve their table manners. White shows spills best, as we all know, so it'll be easier for my children to notice their messes. I saw at the time that I ordered the table clothes online that the washing instructions didn't match the product details. Right now, I'm testing one out because I'm no fabric expert. (So, if you're a fabric expert, just stop reading now so my ignorance doesn't make you sick.) The product details say you don't need to iron them: The table cloth is made from a material that is always smooth immediately after washing, so that you don’t need to iron it.) The instructions actually say wash (40C, which equals only 104F) but don't tumble dry and do iron them. Sigh.... Ironing isn't something I want to add to my to-do list! With seven people in the house, I'm trying to streamline our laundry! So, I'm testing one out while pretending that I have time to do so so that you--and I--will know whether these really, truly work for people like us who don't want to spend their time ironing. (You're welcome!) Once my order arrived (2 months later due to COVID-19 delays) I did a hot speed wash (forgetting it said 40C/104F wash) with a medium dry to try to get rid of the original fold lines. (The tag says iron 140-160C, which corresponds to my dryer's medium setting. Don't ask me why it would say max 40C wash and 140-160C iron because I can't help you there.) The original folds (of which there are MANY) were horribly obvious, and the wrinkles from washing it were visible too. I was very disappointed. I got it wet again and tossed it in the dryer on a high setting with the plan to take it out early. I hoped it would be hot enough to unwrinkle the fabric but not hot so long that the fabric was damaged. (Recall my admittance of ignorance? I know enough to know higher heats can damage synthetic fabrics--or at least now I do after looking up fabric washing temperatures, which I'm always forgetting.) The original wrinkles are still visible, but not nearly as badly, and the embossing (not mentioned in the details nor visible on at least my smartphone's screen; the diamonds are about 4 and 3 inches from corner to opposite corner) is standing out now. It actually looks much better than it did before. The hems are puckering lightly but not badly enough that the table cloth looks bad. Hopefully the original wrinkles will continue to relax over time. The earlier wrinkles from the washer are gone, though! Those things are good enough for me. I can't be a perfectist if I want to run a household of five happy children, haha! I'm planning to keep these table cloths and just train my family on how to dry them. High but short dry setting; place on clean table or drape over furniture to cool will likely be posted as a visual reminder. (Yes, the word clean needs to be included with this family, haha!)4
Stain ResistentGeorgina SI bought this for a lunch party. First time used it and people spilt tomato pasta sauce on it. Washed it and there were no stains left.5

Great sizing for multi useSarahm77So far so good. Just washed it for the first time. Came out good. It says no ironing needed, but the original folds are still noticeable. Not a big deal, but hoping they will slowly disappear.4
Table ClothNo replyThis is pretty ok. Brightened up my kitchen. Do not like the pattern too much, though. Wish they offered more with other selections.5

Our take on polyester

Polyester is a durable, wrinkle-resistant and easy-care material that is ideal for many home furnishing products like rugs, pillows, quilts and cushions. The downside to virgin polyester is that it is made from oil, coal or natural gas. This means that when we use virgin polyester, we are exhausting the planet’s natural resources. Our response to this, is to replace all virgin polyester with recycled in our products. In 2020, we achieved the milestone of replacing 79% of the virgin polyester used in IKEA textile products and will accelerate the transformation towards the aim of only using recycled polyester throughout the product range where polyester is used.

Virgin vs recycled polyester

Originally, all polyester was made from oil-based raw materials which are not renewable but we are switching to only using recycled polyester. The good thing is that polyester can be recycled over and over, without negatively affecting the quality of our products. When we make products from recycled polyester, we give a second life to material that is not biodegradable and reduce the amount that may otherwise end up in landfill or the ocean. Instead, PET and other sources of polyester are used to make textiles, storage boxes, kitchen fronts and even lamps. Recycled polyester is just as good as virgin polyester in terms of looks, quality and function, and produces about 50% less in CO2 emissions. And the material is just as clean and safe in every way.

Some challenges with recycled polyester

Recycled polyester makes us less dependent on oil. The amount we convert, is equal to the amount of virgin fossil fuel we eliminate from our polyester raw material (this excludes potential dyeing and other post recycled polyester production treatments). With some exceptions, the challenge is not the conversion of polyester into recycled itself, but to make it available to everyone by keeping it affordable. Buying low environmental impact products often comes with a higher price tag. We want to change that by working to make recycled polyester products more affordable and accessible to the many people.

Only recycled polyester

IKEA is committed to end the dependency on virgin fossil materials and only use renewable or recycled materials by 2030. We are accelerating this movement for polyester in our range and aim to replace all virgin polyester in our textile products with recycled. In 2020, IKEA replaced 79% of the virgin polyester used in IKEA textile products with recycled polyester. In volume, this means we converted 130,000 metric tonnes of recycled polyester, and saved 200,000 tonnes of virign polyester. We haven’t reached our 100% goal yet, but we have come far and overcome many obstacles on the way. These volumes make us a leader in converting to recycled polyester and we hope that our decisions can inspire and motivate whole industries to change.

Responsible sourcing

At IKEA, we demand that all recycled polyester used in IKEA products shall come from recyclers that are compliant with the Global Recycled Standard and traceability is secured to the IKEA product through requirements toward the IKEA Suppliers. By only using recycled polyester that meets the Global Recycled Standards we manage to secure social, environmental and chemical practices at the recycler’s production. We believe that the GRS standard is the best standard on the market today. We work with our partners and textile organisations such as Textile Exchange to further improve standards on recycled materials, including traceability of material beyond the recycling units.

Material

What is recycled polyester?

When we create products from recycled polyester, PET bottles, and other sources, they get a new life in products like textiles, storage boxes, kitchen fronts, and even lamps. When using them, you get to enjoy exactly the same quality and function as with virgin polyester products. And naturally, they’re just as clean and safe in every way. And perhaps the very best part – you contribute to using less new raw materials too.
