By using sawmill leftovers and scrap wood in the particle board in this product, we make use of whole trees and not only the trunks. That way, we take better care of resources.

We want to have a positive impact on the planet. That is why by 2030, we want all materials in our products to be recycled or renewable, and sourced in responsible ways.

Bought 2MorganBought these for my craft room and they were perfect!5
Sturdy and Beautiful!AllyI love how customizable the Billy bookcases are! They are easy to build and I was surprised at how sturdy they are. That being said, I was disappointed that they were advertised as being 93" tall when in reality they just send a height extension with a standard bookcase. I was excited to not have the seam of the extension, so that was a bit of a letdown, but they still look great. One of my bookcases is also about 0.25" higher on one side which makes it uneven with the shelf next to it. The delivery process was a nightmare, but I'd still highly recommend!4
Billy bookcase assemblyPeggyThe assembly was easy and quick. Every hole matched up when putting together. I recommend checking out YouTube videos for tips and hints to make the process go quick and smoothly.5
awesome productTerriawesome product5
BookcaseDouglasThe product is wonderful, it is worth the extra cost to get the natural finish. It was easy to put up and it looks great in the kid's playroom. Ikea however has been a thorn. I had wanted to talk to someone about purchasing the product or picking it up at the store, but it was impossible to get in touch with someone. I had gone into the store and that will likely never happen again. The help in the store obviously did not want to deal with me asking questions. I had purchased a few other items and was sent in the warehouse to fethc4
Love the bookcaseJAIDEEP A.We recently purchased this bookcase. We love the overall look, the capacity and the sturdiness.5
These bookcases are so versatileDebraThese bookcases are so versatile and affordable. There is nothing you can't do with these!5
The downside is that itJohnThe downside is that it took 4 months of visiting IKEA's website to obtain this bookcase. The upside is that the installation is now complete, looks good and meets my requirements.5
I didn"t want to spendNitaI didn't want to spend a lot of money on custom built shelving so these fit my needs. I am planning to buy more of them for another space in my room.5
Love the shelvesMaryVery happy with our new shelves. They fit in our space perfectly and look great. Easy to assemble.5
Don’t be fooledLiaThis looks like it ends up being one large bookcase. But, after you build all six packages, you are left with three separate bookcases with no instructions or hardware for attaching them together into one piece. I had to look up YouTube videos and roam around the hardware store to figure out how to attach them together. If you don’t believe me, look at the manuals online before you buy this. In the end, I made it work, but no thanks to IKEA. They have no information about this anywhere. Also, their customer service right now is non-existent, whether you try online, by phone or by Twitter. Just look at the IKEA US help Twitter account at all the complaints.2
The price was reasonable butRickThe price was reasonable but due to Covid 19 I wanted to have it shipped but the shipping cost was ridiculous. Lucky me I was able to do pick up because there's an Ikea store near where I live.4
3 of the same, check it.Check itWhat was ordered is what is pictured, what was delivered was 3 of the same wider shelves. The two top wide shelves was fine. The top middle was for the narrow shelf which was not part of the order that was delivered. It was too later since we already put the two wide shelves together, so when we opened the third one, we found out it was not the narrow shelf for the middle. Too much trouble to pack it up & exchange it. Other that that it’s fine. Got more shelves that it should have.3
Bullseye 31Great product and easy assembly5
TriscuitMakes for a wonderful home library4
Fills the Wall! You can never have enoughI ordered this online to be picked up at the store. The pickup was quick and efficient on a busy Sunday. It comes in several boxes and a few are long and heavy so be prepared. Assembly was easy. It is solid and with the extra height there is a lot of storage in this unit. Check for ideas online on how to add detail and character to this standard piece.5
Svelte – looks like built-in – no easy assemblybernie xyzzyMay be a tad heavy for one person to handle the box. After assembly you can move the case holding ends or the center shelf that will not break as with many other assembled cases. The boxes do not fit in a sub-compact car and had to leave back-lid open. The boxes just fit in a compact car; just stick your wife in the back seat. There are black plugs that look good in this case; however, there were grey plugs that came with the kit. Had to go to Ikea to get the black plugs. There is a small gap on the extensions that can only be seen if you are over 7 feet tall. There is an excellent Ikea instruction booklet and I use tools from Ikea for assembly. Always have sufficient parts and warnings about attaching to the wall. The assembly is quite quick and easy. The instructions keep you from putting what look almost identical boards in the wrong place or direction. I chose these shelves because they are just deep enough to hold one layer of books and do not warp over the years. For paperback books I use the optional glass shelves that take up less space. On the half high cases I use a glass shelf on top as a coaster and to protect from cats and dust. I am replacing all the odds and ends book cases with BILLY Bookcase for uniformity. Had to buy more cases to get books off the ground and out of boxes.5
DissappointedAlso DisappointedThe bookcases were assembled and installed. Only then did we realize that one of the units is over a half inch taller than the others, which also affects the shelf placements. Very noticeable.2
Billy built-in hackSSBuckI bought 3 billies from IKEA and trim pieces from a hardware store. I’m not incredibly handy, but I made these bookcases look as if they are built-ins with a little help from Pinterest5
Looks expensiveSlwatk01We just installed this in our new study. I was worried it would look cheap but it does not at all. Best price I could find for something this size5

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

What is particleboard?

Particleboard is made from recycled wood and sawmill waste – so wood pieces with the wrong shade, woodchips and sawdust become a valuable resource instead of being discarded. We use boards for things like bookcases, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect from wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil that adds to the furniture's look. The day your sofa or bed needs replacing, the material in the particleboard can be recycled into something entirely new.
