Let the youngest ones join the table
Every tenth second, more than 40 children are born somewhere on Earth. They grow up in different living situations and in all kinds of family constellations. But they all have similar needs the first years – for example to try out new exciting food and practice their eating skills. A good way to do that is to watch what others do, while getting some help along the way. With ANTILOP high chair, children can learn and share meal experiences in a safe way with the rest of us, at a price that sits well with most families.
There is more than one way to approach the challenge of creating affordable furniture that simplifies people’s lives. Sometimes it can be good to do things a little differently. This became obvious when we asked one of our engineers, John Forsén, an expert in construction and materials, to see if we could create a good high chair that lets children and their parents spend time together around the dining table.
First, let’s take you back to the mid-90s. Back then, many of us were fascinated by a new thing called the internet, and mobile phones were kind of a novelty. During this time IKEA products were normally developed through close collaboration between a designer and a design engineer – the designer did sketches and the design engineer created constructional drawings. However, with ANTILOP John approached the challenge from a slightly more technical point of view. He skipped the sketches and went straight to creating a model in the computer. “I had an idea of how the finished result should look, so I started by calculating where the legs had to be, and at what angle, to get a safe and stable construction”, he explains.
A low price, but not at any cost
To get the low price, the chair had to have a simple construction. One seat, a belt and four click-on legs later and ANTILOP was born. “I focused on the necessities. ANTILOP is optimized to be strong and easy to manufacture. The fact that we use plastic and steel, and very little of it, enabled the low price”, says John. The construction also makes it easy to bring the chair with you whenever it’s mealtime out of the home. Or have an extra chair waiting at the grandparents when the grownups are out for dinner on their own. But, the definition of good furniture covers more than a low price. The quality has to be there too. ANTILOP is regularly inspected and scrutinized by independent test labs in Europe, Asia and North America. We take the toughest demands in each region and make sure ANTILOP lives up to all of them. If a new law or standard is introduced we test the chair again.
Everyday wear and tear since the 90’s
Today, ANTILOP has become somewhat of a classic and is found in thousands of homes. For more than 20 years it has enabled the youngest family members to join in on the conversations around the dinner table, and made the everyday a little easier for families around the world. It shows that doing things differently when creating good furniture can be just the way to do it.
