People & Communities
Weaving a better future for handmade rugs and the people who make themRug weaving in India has a rich history, and nurturing this unique craftsmanship starts with the skilled men and women who make IKEA rugs. Together with our suppliers, we have consolidated weaving into centers with good working conditions, fair wages, stable work and care for the environment. It’s a more sustainable way of producing handmade rugs — one that ensures the well-being of the weavers and their communities, the resources we use and our business.
Behind the design
Can rugs be art?IKEA continues the quest to make great art accessible to everyone. For this year’s edition of IKEA Art Event, we asked eight contemporary artists, with different artistic expressions, to each design a rug. The result? A limited-edition collection of off-the-wall art pieces. This handmade rug is designed by Polish graphic artist Filip Pagowski. His work is full of energy, bold shapes, vitality and dynamism. This design reflects the endless pattern of yarn in the weave of a rug.
