Ratings and reviews

Poor QualityRachelMost of the IKEA furniture I own is pretty good and sturdy. They’ve even moved house a couple of times. This product is a new line for me. The way it’s assembled isn’t sturdy nor handy. I had to put some pressure on the furniture in order to get the pins in. By doing this, I actually made a dent in the furniture. Luckily it’s hidden from sight but it showed the low quality of the shelves. Once fully assembled. It was much lighter than I anticipated and it’s not as stable as I thought it would be. It’s too light and cheaply made. I wouldn’t buy it again.1
Great productRobinThis is the third time I have bought kallax shelving. I love the product. Instructions are easy to understand, easy assembly and very sturdy!!5
Love it.VirginiaEasy to put together. Looks great. Perfect for toy storage in our playroom.5
Good shelf for my kids,CristinaGood shelf for my kids, I would have preferred a different color but none in stock at my time of purchase4
Record Collection BasicBOMost record collectors are no strangers to the KALLAX collection as an affordable solution in keeping and organizing LPs. It’s a known vinyl collecting staple and we direly needed to expand our storing capacity. After crunching some numbers on how much it would cost to build our own shelves out of solid wood, we decided the time and energy saved was a big pro. So we opted instead for assembling out of the box. This is our very first KALLAX shelf and while it does the job, ours also came with some finish defects / quality control issues. The white foil on two shelves came chipped (at the 90 degree edges) which is a big disappointment! It’s too large and cumbersome to take apart, rent a car yet again, only to lug it back and exchange for another. Lately, I’ve noticed that my local IKEA has been having difficulty stocking these which meant exchanging may not have even been a straightforward option. I’ve signed up for inventory notifications since March, received email notificatiob of restock, gone to the store the same day, only to learn that they’d sold out already. 3 stars off for the defect, disappointment and the drag it would’ve been had we brought it back. Otherwise, we would’ve given the KALLAX a 5 star for ease of collection since the boxes are marked 1 and 2 and the SKU is only available on one of the boxes for clarity. The design is simple and versatile and we like how IKEA now includes an improved Allen/hex key design which enables better gripping/torsion.2
Practical and versatile shelvingSANDRAThis sturdy, practical, and versatile shelving works for any room in the house. I use one in the bathroom to organize the "stuff" that usually ends up on the counter top. The other is great for storage in a bedroom with minimal closet space, so a place for stuffed toys and books; the containers that Ikea has available to fit the unit are perfect for storing or hiding away small items; I use one with the long side as the base, and the other with the short side as the base.5
Vinyl storageAndrewPerfect for my vinyl album collection5
Great storage unitCATHYLove the look and durability of this product. I have purchased 4 doors to hide those little things and bought 4 baskets to add to the look but still hide things that should not be out on display!5

This is the second oneSherryThis is the second one we bought.5
We are happy with theDianaWe are happy with the product but unhappy that all of the components to put one of the shelves up wasn't included in the order and when I contacted Ikea I had quite a time to finally get someone to hear what I was saying (live chat) and they said they were sending a box of parts to me and I am still waiting for it to arrive.5
Very easy to installYasirVery easy to install4
Great productJESSICAGreat product5
good but not the same qualityJuliaI have an older shelf 4x4 kallax about 8 years old now and the quality and durability is night and day. No more extra bolts to tighten bolts, hollow shelf’s. Little wooden dowels. No more wood grain texture, the compartment part of it and design it’s self is nice but if you’re trying to get what you had it’s not it and the durability and quality have been reduced significantly. For a price increase it’s not it.3

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA we believe that sourced in a responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

Quality and feel

At first glance, KALLAX is a simple shelving unit, but it’s based on a love for details. The unit has smooth surfaces and rounded edges that make it appealing to the eye and enjoyable to touch. We’ve also worked hard to make the shelves align perfectly so
