What are the different types of mattresses?

These are the main types of mattresses. Within each type you’ll find a lot of different options so you can choose the best comfort and support for you to get a good night’s sleep.

In sprung mattresses the springs help keep your body in a comfortable, supported position. Your weight is spread evenly over the whole mattress, so there’s not too much pressure on any part of you. They include at least one layer of foam for added comfort.
Foam and latex mattresses can contain different types of foam, including memory foam, but they all provide good support, adapt their shape to the contours of your body, and absorb the shock of body movements.

      New mattress? New mattress protector!

Give your new mattress a better chance for a long-lasting life by adding a protective layer. From temperature-regulating to waterproof, our range of protectors will help you find the performance you need, night after night. They’re made with largely recycled materials too – one more thing to sleep easy about.

Is it fair to say that choosing a mattress is one of the most important decisions you can make in life? We certainly think so. The fact is that a good night’s sleep is the key to well-being. We sleep for one-third of our lives, which also means we spend roughly one-third of our life on different kinds of mattresses. Needless to say – a mattress matters! Everyone sleeps a little differently. Understanding the different mattress types will help you choose one which suits your sleep perfectly.

          Mattress types

At IKEA, mattress selection has never been easier. You'll find the most popular mattress types and mattress toppers for your sleeping style, size, and comfort preferences. Do you prefer a firm or medium-firm mattress that feels great to stretch out on, or a soft mattress that you can sink into like a dream? One mattress feels like sleeping on a field beneath the stars, another feels like resting on a cloud. The point is – everyone prefers a different kind of mattress.

Choosing a mattress requires you to consider the softness or firmness you prefer, but also what size feels most comfortable, and whether there’s a particular material that helps you sleep well. If you find yourself often waking up with aches or pains, chances are you need a different type of mattress entirely.

          Foam and latex mattresses

Foam and latex mattresses mould to the shape of your body and distribute your weight evenly. These mattresses provide support for your whole body without putting extra pressure on any specific body parts. They are also silent (no creaky springs!) and absorb the shock of movement. This makes foam and latex mattresses a great choice if you have a partner who tosses and turns in their sleep.

          Spring mattresses

Our spring mattresses also distribute your weight evenly, so that there’s no extra pressure on any part of your body. A key difference between foam and latex mattresses, however, is that the open spring construction helps airflow through the mattress. This supports the ventilation in the mattress and can help you keep cool while you sleep. For some, it may give the mattress a fresher, airier feeling.

          Mattresses in different sizes

You won’t have any trouble finding a mattress in a size that perfectly fits your bedroom, whether it’s a huge master bedroom or a small and cozy space. All IKEA beds, mattresses, and bedding sold in Canada are sold in Standard North American sizes.

How do I choose a mattress?

To find the right mattress for you, you should think about:

          1. Firm, medium firm, or plush?
We offer a variety of different mattresses. Deciding if you want a firm, medium-firm, or plush mattress will help you narrow down your choice considerably.

A firm mattress prevents the neck and lower back from sinking too deeply into the mattress. A better choice for back sleepers.

A softer mattress shapes itself around the shoulders and hips. At the same time, the mattress provides support for the rest of the body. A better choice for side sleepers.

          2. Your budget
We have mattresses to fit every budget—from basic mattresses to mattresses made with high-quality natural materials. But you can be sure that everyone is designed to give you a good night’s sleep.

What is the best mattress to buy?

The best mattress to buy depends on different factors, such as your sleeping position, preferred material, and budget.

          • Sleeping position:

If you are a side sleeper, we recommend a plush or medium-firm mattress. A softer mattress shapes itself around the shoulders and hips. At the same time, the mattress provides support for the rest of the body.

For back sleepers, we recommend a firm mattress that prevents the neck and lower back from sinking too deeply into the mattress.

          • Preferred material:

Choose from our spring or foam & latex mattresses. Our spring mattresses offer individually wrapped springs that work independently to closely follow your movements and the contours of your body.

Our foam & latex mattresses are soft and resilient, and they spread your body weight evenly to promote restful sleep and better blood circulation.

          • Your budget:

We have mattresses to fit every budget—from basic mattresses to mattresses made with high-quality natural materials. But you can be sure that everyone is designed to give you a good night’s sleep.

How much should I spend on a mattress?

How much you should spend on a mattress depends on your budget. We have mattresses to fit every budget—from basic mattresses to mattresses made with high-quality natural materials. But you can be sure that every IKEA mattress is designed to give you a good night’s sleep.

To find a mattress that fits your budget, use the price filter when shopping for a spring mattress or foam & latex mattress.

How long does an IKEA mattress take to completely unroll?

Before using it for the first time, it’s normal for new mattresses to feel a bit too firm, so you should allow one month for your body to get used to the mattress and for the mattress to get used to your body. New materials also have their own particular smell. We recommend airing the mattress to help eliminate any smell. If you buy a roll-packed mattress, you can use it straight away but keep in mind that it takes 3–4 days of use for them to regain their shape.

Does IKEA remove my old mattress?

          How to clean a mattress?

          1. Complement the mattress with a mattress protector or a separate pillow top. It makes it more hygienic, as it is easy to remove and clean. Some mattresses and pillow tops have a washable cover. Read the tag inside the cover for more information.

          2. Make sure that the zipper is closed when washing the mattress cover. Vacuuming the mattress helps to remove dust and mites. Use upholstery cleaner to remove stains.

          3. If your mattress is turnable you should turn it about every three months. Turning a mattress ensures more even wear and helps to prolong its comfort. Don’t fold the mattress. It can damage the springs and materials inside.

          4. Even the best mattresses become less comfortable with age, and all mattresses accumulate dust and mites over the years. So even if the mattresses have a 10-year warranty, we still recommend that you change your mattress every 8-10 years.

          Comfort Levels

          Firm Mattresses
A slightly firmer mattress prevents the neck and lower back from sinking too deeply into the mattress. A better choice for back sleepers.

          Medium Firm Mattresses
A softer mattress shapes itself around the shoulders and hips. At the same time, the mattress provides support for the rest of the body. A better choice for side sleepers and stomach sleepers.
