Great desk - tip for assemblyMike D.Just finished assembling this desk for my daughter. It is a beautiful desk with large surface area. My daughter loves it! Drawers are great and middle shelf is adjustable. File folder hangers seem a bit useless, but they are there if you want them.
Key tip for assembly: On the last step, before putting the desktop on top of the frame, the instructions have you inserting the black rotating connectors before placing the desktop in place. DO NOT DO THIS! You are more likely to smash/bend/break a connector. Put them in AFTER placing the desktop. Also, the corresponding standoffs should not be too tight into the underside of the tabletop, or the black connectors will have too little to connect with.
Finally, if, like me, the large dowels are not going in deep enough or not easily enough, ream out their holes with a 5/16 drill bit. The dowels should bit slightly snug, but not impossible to hammer in.
Good luck! It's a sturdy desk!5

Really like this deskKimberlyIt's a great size, it's pretty and it's real wood. It's no problem putting together - ok, my teen did it so lucky me! I got the RISSLA desk pad so that the top will stay nice. The wood is soft so without the cover I'm sure we would scratch it up a bit. But the cover is great. Lots of room in the desk. I really like it. It's hard to find a large wood desk like this anywhere at all unless you are willing to pay thousands of dollars for a solid wood executive desk - which we cannot!5
Great desk!!LeslieLove this desk!! It’s functional and classic! It looks amazing in my space. Love the clean lines. 😊5
Nice size desk but…GeorgetteThe size and look are nice but the file drawer is too narrow so have to hang the letter sized files so they are aligned front to back which makes the papers inside slip out if you open the drawer with any speed. Would have been better if the other side were a couple inches narrower and put that extra room on the drawer side. Other than that the desk feels solid and with the desktop pad I purchased to protect the top I think it will look nice for a while.3

Hemnes DeskPaulI have other Hemnes products and this item is as I expected good quality for the price. It was on sale with IKEA family discount.5
It is a good buyVIJAYIt is a good buy but believe the instruction manual could be better organized on their steps to assemble the unit. Especially the inner shelves and supports.4
Generally satisfiedPAMELAThis desk meets my expectations overall and looks good in my home office. However, It took a long-g-g time to assemble and plenty of patience! Also, the drawers do NOT fit well. They stick together when opening and closing and there doesn't seem to be any way to rectify this problem.3
Looks great but poor quality & not practicalShandra T.I've purchased many IKEA products over the years and I found this desk incredibly difficult to assemble. None of the pre-drilled holes for either drawer worked. Both drawers catch on the runners. I can't move the desk at all without having the cabinet come apart. The top doesn't fit flush and came with three cracks / defects in it. The wood is so soft that it doesn't work well as a writing surface. I've had to purchase a pad to go on top so that I can use it. Not at all what I would have expected at this price point.1

It’s good quality and hasRosettaIt’s good quality and has ample storage. I was a little disappointed in how easily it scratches. I bought a large vinyl desk mat for protection when writing.4
Pretty desk, parts are poor qualityPoorquality1986I first fell in love with the Hemnes set back in the early 2000's when I purchased the full bedroom set that I still have now and love. What I appreciated about the bedroom set was the easy and quality of set up. So When I was shopping for a new office desk, and I saw that it was a similar line and matched some of the furniture that was already in my home, I jumped at. Like with all the other furniture I have purchased I chose to build it myself, which wasn't a problem and I followed the instructions. Where the problem comes in is that they ask for the full cabinet to be built prior to the rails for the drawers going in. Again not a big problem, until it was realized that the holes that were pre drilled for the screws didn't actually assist and made hanging the rails difficult. Now completed the desk looks nice, but you can hear the drawers catching one of the screws.2

Our take on wood
Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA we believe that sourced in a responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.
Forests are critical for life on earth
Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.
100% wood from more sustainable sources
At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.
IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030
As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.
We accomplish more by working together
For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.
What is solid wood?
Solid wood is one of our favourite materials and is part of our Scandinavian heritage. It is also a timeless material with many uses. Regardless of the wood species, it is durable, beautiful and renewable. We strive to use this raw material as smartly and efficiently as possible to avoid waste – and we also invest in facilities and logistics so that we can increase the use of recycled wood.
