  • The Doi Tung Development project

IKEA has several long-term partnerships with social enterprises mainly owned and operated by women, and Doi Tung is one of them. We want to support long-term sustainable change in a way that charity by itself can’t, by giving access to a global marketplace – a good foundation for empowerment and independence.

Doi Tung’s mission is to revive the natural forest, devastated by the production of opium not so long ago, and to improve healthcare, education and living conditions for the people of the region, and they have come a long way already. Earning a sustainable income gives these artisans a chance to educate and care for their children, and to create a better future.

  • The EFTERTANKE limited edition IKEA collection of handmade textiles, ceramics and paper products was created here, in the mountains of northern Thailand, in collaboration with social entrepreneur Doi Tung.

“The Doi Tung Development Project has made our life much better. Before the project started, we had a difficult life; the roads were in a bad condition, we didn’t have nationality so we couldn’t work, couldn’t go anywhere.”

  • The bowls, plates, jugs and vases from the IKEA EFTERTANKE limited edition collection were hand-formed by skilled artisans. This is our sixth co-created collection made for a positive change, together with social entrepreneur Doi Tung in Thailand.

    Hand-formed ceramics

Slight imperfections – some designed some occurring organically – make each piece of pottery in the EFTERTANKE collection unique. These imperfections are a celebration of the human touch and skills of the artisans who created the collection.

The Doi Tung Development Project introduced ceramic handicraft to the region during reforestation of the area. The local red clay was originally mixed with vetiver grass – a hardy species used to stabilise eroded soil – to create plant pots for the project’s nursery. The recipe for the clay has since been refined to withstand high firing temperatures allowing skilled artisans of Doi Tung to create beautiful high-quality designs.

  • “We’ve always believed that good design can make a big difference in people’s lives. That’s why we’re especially proud to collaborate with social enterprises that are providing livelihoods for skilled artisans and making a huge difference in the lives of their communities.”

    Marcus Engman, Design manager, IKEA

    Hand-woven textiles

The Hill Tribe people of northern Thailand are well known for their colourful, intricately handwoven, traditional clothing decorated with strands of beads, coins and tufts of yarn.

Weaving naturally became one of the first livelihood programmes at Doi Tung. Today, many highly skilled artisans are creating products for the home such as cushion covers, towels, and table clothes. The tightly woven fabrics are super soft and the patterns are clean and simple, with a timeless design.

  • The handmade paper products of our EFTERTANKE limited edition IKEA collection, are made by artisans with ancient techniques and bark from the mulberry tree. EFTERTANKE was co-created with social entrepreneurs in Thailand for a positive change.

    Handmade paper

In 1995 the Doi Tung Development Project re-introduced the almost lost ancient craft of papermaking to the region as a way to provide new livelihood opportunities for the local people. Today papermaking at Doi Tung employs many artisans making products such as boxes, note pads, and bags.

Bark from the indigenous mulberry tree is collected by villagers in the area and sold to Doi Tung. The mulberry tree is abundant in the area with the number of trees increasing over the years after the reforestation efforts of Doi Tung.

  • Handmade paper boxes, gift bags and note pads with black and white hand-painted stripes, are part of the IKEA EFTERTANKE limited edition collection of handcrafted textiles, ceramics and paper products, co-created with social entrepreneurs in Thailand.
