Emission-free vehicles

By 2030 our ambition is to reduce more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire IKEA value chain emits. Driving emission-free vehicles is an important step towards realizing this ambition.

Zero emission vehicles on the road

Vans make a major contribution to air pollution, noise pollution and traffic jams. Therefore, IKEA Netherlands is switching to electric vans. These are vehicles that drive emission-free from battery to wheel. When we refer to zero emission vehicles, we are specifically referring to emissions from battery-to-wheel perspective. This means we are considering only the CO2 emissions generated while the vehicle is in operation, starting with the electricity in the battery to the vehicle's tailpipe emissions. We do not include emissions associated with the production and distribution of electricity in this context because we do not have full influence on this chain.

Where are we today?

At IKEA, we have committed to source 100% renewable electricity by 2025 across Ingka operations. In the Netherlands, already all the electricity we use come from renewable sources (2023). We have committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions in all stages of our value chain. IKEA Netherlands aims to have 100% of our home deliveries worldwide by electric vehicles (EV) or other emission-free solutions by 2025.

On the road to success

We are on our way to reaching our goals: By 2023, 23% of home deliveries in the Netherlands where already emission-free.  By the end of 2024, we want at least 50% of our deliveries to be emission-free. There are currently 32 electric vans on the road in the Netherlands for IKEA (November 2023). We want to generate as much of our own energy as possible with our more than 55.000 solar panels.
