Sauna and relaxation on the shores of Lake Zurich

In 2020, the “Sauna Cubes” project by Biola Mona and Mabel Lutz emerged as one of the winning projects from the Küsnacht municipality’s ideas competition. Now, after two years of planning, the two women are realising their dream of a wellness oasis in the lido of Küsnacht on Lake Zurich. IKEA’s business team eagerly supported them with implementing their design ideas.

Inspired by the Mongolian colours

«We were looking to create a colourful, warm ambiance that is also modern and practical. The focus was always on making this suitable for hospitality use. We adapted the cosy, boho and retro trends to IKEA’s Scandinavian shapes, added a touch of hygge style for comfort, spiced things up with a pinch of Art Deco, and voilà: this is what we came up with.»

Space for wellness and relaxation

The lido offers enough space for the “Sauna Cubes” project for interim winter use from October to the end of March for:

  • Four sauna cubes, each with space for six to eight people
  • A small yurt that can be used as a quiet relaxation space
  • A larger relaxation yurt where people can talk  and have a small bite to eat
  • The Winter Bistro
  • The large terrace with plenty of seating available

What needs had to be taken into account?

With the sauna, Biola Mona and Mabel Lutz want to offer a place of relaxation where guests can come together in a cosy atmosphere, socialise and eat a warm soup all at the same time – just as they would in the far north. The aim was to create a “feel-good space” for all guests to enjoy a nice break.

What challenges did IKEA’s business team have to overcome?

  • The round shape of the yurts is a great challenge when it comes to planning
  • The furniture must be suitable for hospitality use
  • The set-up should be quick and easy to assemble and disassemble
  • Storage in summer should take up as little space as possible to keep storage costs low
  • Many of the summer products were already sold out in August

Customer feedback on the service experience

«Amazing, we were supported very attentively by the IKEA business team, and everyone was open to our ideas. As you offer so many differently themed products, we were quickly able to find the right look.»
