Survived multiple movesJamesWe bought our first Billy bookcase in January 2018. We have since relocated three times, including twice across state lines, and we have had exactly zero issues with this. It still looks great and performs well. After seven years, we were in need of an additional cabinet so we adde3d the half doors to our Billy. Very easy to make this modification and the cabinet looks great. We are so happy with it at that we bought two more full size Billy cabinets with the full doors and the narrow Billy and made the corner unit like was shown in the store. Highly recommend this product!

Less than I expected but still pretty good PetrosThese are basically nice bookcases for the price. It’s a fair deal not a great deal. The white ones that I got the finish on the shelves is so thin that if you drop something not that hard it will nick to finish. The other thing is some parts have been now changed to plastic that used to be metal. I suppose it won’t make a tremendous difference. And the backing board is a trifold which you can see, but I understand it had to be foldable to ship. And finally, they don’t include the long wall screws that you need in order to stabilize the shelf, which is a problem because if you for instance, put it up and then find out like I did that there’s no long screws to go into the wall to secure it now you’ve got a shelf which is unsecured and if you had some kids running around, you’d have to take them with you to buy some screws because the shelf could easily tip over so it seems they should at least give you a couple of 2 inch drywall screws.
Amazing bookshelf ZoeThese are so sturdy and beautiful and easy to assemble. We have one in each room of the house and hope to have more in the future!
BookcaseMarissaDefinitely my favorite bookcase I’ve owned. They are very sturdy and easy to put together. I love that the shelving is fairly adjustable minus the center shelf which provides additional support. I have 2 of these bookcases and they are both full of books and I definitely plan on buying more in the future.
Awesome Design Michael These shelves are very sturdy and the unique way that the move able shelves are attached is awesome. They have a unique support system unlike any I've seen. No worries about the shelves falling down. A unique cute out for baseboards in the back. It allows you to move it completely against the wall, and secure it to prevent it from turning over. Awesome Design!

Not worth the price for particle boardLaceyThe Billy is the new Kallax. These are going to flood Marketplace for years to come, for $10-20 and no one will buy them.
You are paying for particle board. I needed a tall shelf with doors for a specific use, but not really in love with these. They're an odd depth that doesn't fit anything but books, the doors cost $40 EACH, and the shelf itself would likely melt if it gets wet.
This was made to be thrown in a landfill after a couple years which is unfortunate. $70+ for the shelf plus doors would be a good price, $150+ for all of it is a joke.
Particle board. Flimsy, boring, unstable.
Great for a home office/libraryRobertI put together 5 of these today (and 2 of the narrow ones). Assembly was easy. There are two specific features I really like. First, the rounded edges with the laminant wrapped. This is so much better than the sharp edges where the laminant meets like you get with ither products. Second, I like the way the back slides into place and the fasteners. Much better than the ones that lay it on the back and attach with nails.
Very sturdy and affordable DialSometimes you get what you pay for and this time we did! This bookcase is sturdy and looks really nice, sturdy shelves that can be adjusted, all accessories to mount to the wall if necessary. Will say that all of the products we’ve purchased have been made well and durable. You get what you pay for.
SmellyJavedLike the previous version of the Billy bookcase this is a pretty sturdy unit but the finish makes the shelf look a little lower quality. The real issue I've had with this shelf is that the backboard has a strong chemical smell. Despite airing the shelf outside for days and it now standing in the house for almost 3 months it still has a noticeable smell. I won't be buying another one and am hesitant to buy other IKEA products with similar backboards.

Woah quality has declinedSaraWe bought a bunch of the Billy bookcases a few years ago and loved them, so we got a few more recently for added storage. These recent ones are a joke. Most of the hardware has been replaced with cheap plastic pieces and all the front edges of the unit are finished with painted-over tape that goes around each side. The tape is bubbling and wrinkled as well. What happened, Ikea?!

What is particleboard?
Particleboard is made from recycled wood and sawmill leftovers – so wood pieces with the wrong shade, woodchips and sawdust become a resource instead of possibly being discarded. We use boards for things like bookcases, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect from wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil that adds to the furniture's look.

"It was 40 years ago I got the assignment to design a simple, functional and smart storage solution for books. I couldn't have imagined then that BILLY bookcase would wind up in so many homes across the whole world. I remember being especially pleased with the adjustable shelves and the depth of the bookcase - perfect for books. We were also able to transport it in a flat pack - an idea I was actually first to develop. The bookcase is still one of my favorites and I hope it continues to be around for many more years."
