Tempered glass is 4-5 times stronger and more resistant to breaking than regular glass. In case it would break, it shatters into many granular pieces to reduce the risk of injury.

Do not buy…this is garbage AaronI’m okay with particle board,have accepted the price. But the plastic hardware included for assembly such as dowels and locking nuts break when assembling. They used to be metal, because they hold the furniture together, but some wahoo at IKEA thought that saving a buck replacing metal hardware with plastic was a smart move. This bookcase can’t be moved, it’s so brittle and there is no give because cheap plastic and gravity are keeping it together. If you manage to one day get it into a moving truck without it breaking, I doubt it would last the journey.
Sturdy but you cannot replace doorsAlexVery sturdy shelves, and they look nice. They hold a ton of books. However one of my doors shattered and I cannot get a replacement. So I ended up paying $199 for the $99 version since I only have 1 of 2 doors now. If I buy more I guess I'll go with the door less option which is sadly not available in the dark blue color.

I have two and would love to be able to add another Billy to the two I have but in a different version, but the deep navy appears to only be in this configuration with the glass doors. @IKEA, please include this color in the other Billy options. :)
Billy BookcaseBarbaraI really love this Billy bookcase with glass doors. Solid piece of furniture which will be used as a pantry. Plenty of shelves that can be adjusted if needed. The dark blue color is perfect. I booked TaskRabbit to build the bookcase and it took him less than an hour so well worth the cost of the booking. All in all I’m happy with the bookcase and highly recommend.
Love this bookcaseKathyI bought 2 blue Billy Bookcases and put them side by side in my living room. My house is small but these fit perfectly. I love these bookcases. I get so many compliments on them when I have guests. I’m getting ready to buy another one for my hallway.
LOVE this bookcase and the colorNancyLoved finding a bookcase that was not white, or black or gray or wood. The color is a dark dark blue, but you can tell it is blue. It did take a bit of time to put together and think 2 people are necessary, just to have someone to hold a side when necessary, so even a child could help. I was a bit worried at first if everythinjg would fit together well, but it was all just perfectly aligned. Very happy with the bookcase and get lots of compliements. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Assembled as Directed, Still UnstableHeatherI've purchased two pieces of Ikea furniture in the past that I love; a sturdy bedframe and a nice light coffee table, neither of which have ever given me any issue. This piece, however, was unfortunately nothing but issues. I want to be very clear, me and two other people put this together following the directions to a T. However, when we first assembled it and were screwing in the hinges for the doors to attach to, the whole bookcase fell apart. The wooden connectors aren't very tight, and come apart easily. The metal ones secured by the plastic screw mechanism offer little, if any, security. We eventually went and got wood glue, and even with that there are visible gaps. I was also surprised at how thin and flexible the backboard is. It offers no counterweight to the rest of the product. In short, everything was done as instructed, and still the product has visible gaps and is only vaguely sturdy. Really disappointed in the quality for what I paid.
