Great bookshelf, but don’t plan on expanding it laterKevinBought the larger bookshelf about a year ago and recently decided to expand my fiancées library. Got home only to notice my current bookshelf was 2-3 shades darker. Thought I purchased the wrong finish, so I disassembled everything, returned it, bought the darker finish. I got home only to realize this also didn’t match. When I talked to customer service I was told occasionally their suppliers change and there was nothing I could do about it.
So long story short: Don’t purchase these if you plan on expanding your library later on, or if you are buying them to expand the bookshelf you already own.

Billy is the way to go!! MargaritaI got 5 units to build a custom media center for my office/playroom for my son and I to have better organization. Each unit took me less that 15 minutes to build! We added the doors as well for a cleaner look (I get overstimulated easily with messes). I used the Billy tool to help create what I was looking for!
I will say, delivery took forever so in the future I would much rather use the click and collect option and pick it up myself or just go in and shop what I need. Thank you ikea for creating such creative and amazing storage hacks!
Great ShelvesTinaBought the corner hardware separately. They went together easily (make sure you have a ratcheting screwdriver to avoid hand pain and cracking the particleboard veneer).
Perfect for books/media display!DanaI bought 3 with the corner connector kit. Top half is super easy, bottom half not so and once they're in place good luck if you need to shift them BUT! I adore the bookcases. Perfect depth for little book display setups, fits quite a lot if you're just shelving books. Addons are good too, I plan to build a whole library wall with these complete with ladder rail eventually.

BILLY bookcase has been a steady customer favorite for more than 40 years – but old faithful favorites also need to be updated to keep up with the times. We took a closer look at BILLY and came up with some ideas. One of them means more efficient use of materials, and another makes the bookcase easier to assemble and take apart.
“BILLY was introduced in 1979 and has helped millions of people to organize books and other things in the home. But the world has changed a lot since then, and even popular big-sellers need to adapt to new demands and ways of living,” says Umut Ates, one of our co-workers.
Paper means smarter use of raw materials
Easier to assemble and take apart
BILLY fits just as well in the living room as in other areas of the home – the office, dining room or library. It’s easy to expand and combine with other furniture. But one thing that has had potential for improvement is how the bookcase is assembled and taken apart. “Previously, you had to use about 50 small nails to get the back panel in place, but that’s history now. Instead, you snap on the back panel without any tools,” explains Umut. It also makes it easier to disassemble BILLY without damaging it if you move or want to resell your bookcase. “The improvements have made BILLY more adaptable – it can keep up changing life situations – and it wouldn’t surprise me if this storage hero is as popular in 40 years as it is today.”
