The Best BookcaseKATRINAI love each and every single Billy Bookcase! They are super easy to put together and the adjustable shelves make redecorating easy and fluid.5
Billy ShelvesValerieI have an entire wall of Billy shelves to hold my crafting & sewing supplies - 2 tall and 4 shorter units, all connecting together. It is beautiful and even looks built-in. The quality and price are an excellent.5
Piece of junk don’t waste your moneyAimee S.we got this since the reviews were quite good and needed to replace our sons bookcase but I am pretty shocked at the poor quality of this thing. It is incredibly wobbly even with the wall hanger, so wobbly I assumed I had to of built it wrong somewhere (I didn’t) I took one part off it ripped an entire part very poor quality I can’t believe I spent 75 dollars on it if I could I would immediately return it and get a bookshelf from somewhere else. Also getting the back piece on was nearly impossible genuinely so annoying to put together but if it was fine quality I wouldn’t of cared1

Already assembledJosephWe needed a bookcase to keep track library books by the front door. Top shelves those unread, bottom shelf those ready to go back. Found this one in the as is part of IKEA, so already assembled.4
Good for the priceEstefania M.The back of the book case didn’t fit that well but its still a nice book case and i would purchase again.4
Really love itclideReally love it5
Quality/Durability IssuesAbigail B.This is only worth your money if you only plan on using it for a short amount of time. I've had mine for about two years and it's been slowly falling apart on me. I would also be very careful when placing certain objects and moving things on it as well. I use wooden crates as extra organization on my bookshelf and quickly realized that the product scratches very easily. I'm quite glad it held up for as long as it did.3
Great bookcaseLisaGreat bookcase ! Your can really fit lots of books ! Really sturdy and doesn’t wiggle around.5
Billy bookcase is nice andKevinBilly bookcase is nice and easy understand to install for everyone. I love it. It is safe for kids.5
What happened to the natural dark brown color?RON W.Great bookcase but I want to add another to one I purchased a couple of years ago in the brown wood look. Now I can't match it.5
Not as high quality as older Billy bookcasesCourtney P.I have a couple of old Billy bookcases that are great, but I was looking to add another one to a room for more shelving. The shelves are still very easy to put together (it took me about 15 minutes from opening the box to putting it in place). But my big issue is with the quality. The old Billy bookcases I have didn't have any quality issues. On the new one, I can tell that the quality isn't the same. The white paint on the new one is full of bubbles and the wood has some bumps. There are also a couple sections around the corners that don't appear to have gotten any paint to begin with. These could be fixed if you feel comfortable with a little DIY, but I find it too annoying for a brand new piece. The back board also doesn't lie flat, mine is bowed outwards at the seams, so there is a gap between it and the shelves. It's a $30 bookcase, which is great when you're on a budget, but it feels like you get what you pay for with these newer bookcases.3
Billy BookcaseNANCYThese are very adaptable and useful bookcases though assembly instructions could be a bit more clear. The assembly is not that difficult but if the bookcase pieces were numbered to correspond to instructions it would be much easier to assemble.4

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

What is particleboard?

Particleboard is made from recycled wood and sawmill waste – so wood pieces with the wrong shade, woodchips and sawdust become a valuable resource instead of being discarded. We use boards for things like bookcases, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect from wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil that adds to the furniture's look. The day your sofa or bed needs replacing, the material in the particleboard can be recycled into something entirely new.

Designer thoughts

Designer thoughts

"It was 40 years ago I got the assignment to design a simple, functional and smart storage solution for books. I couldn't have imagined then that BILLY bookcase would wind up in so many homes across the whole world. I remember being especially pleased with the adjustable shelves and the depth of the bookcase - perfect for books. We were also able to transport it in a flat pack - an idea I was actually first to develop. The bookcase is still one of my favorites and I hope it continues to be around for many more years."
