Stylish and comfortable sofas for every home

Your sofa is more than just furniture—it’s where you relax, entertain guests, and create memories. Finding the perfect sofa could be considered an art form. Size, material, colour, shape and overall design – all need to be considered. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a couch that doesn’t fit your space, match your overall interior, or is really uncomfortable. The choice can truly make or break the look and feel of an entire living room.

That’s why we have a wide selection of sofas, to make sure you can find your perfect piece of furniture. No matter if you’re on the lookout for a corner sectional, a sleeper sofa, an ottoman or accessories; you’re guaranteed to find it here. And to help you even further, we've put together a quick guide to assist you in your choice.

6 simple steps – how to choose a sofa

Buying a new sofa can feel like a difficult decision. With these six steps, finding the right sofa for your home will be both easier and more enjoyable.

1. Size – find the right dimensions for your sofa

  • Measure the room carefully, including doorways and stairs.
  • Think about how the sofa should be placed – against the wall, freestanding in the room or as part of a sofa group.
  • A sofa that is too large can make the room feel overfurnished and the sofa will not look its best.
  • Use the 2/3 rule: Place the sofa so that it covers about two-thirds of the wall behind it. Choose a coffee table that is about two-thirds the length of the sofa for a harmonious whole.

Compact sofa - small space living made easy

If you’re living in a smaller space, you might be considering a small sofa bed. It’s the perfect solution to the tricky small space problem: it’s a chill place to hang out by day, and a soft and relaxing bed by night. Simply fold-out the mattress when it’s time to go to bed, and then tuck it away behind or below the cushions in the morning. Wondering what to do with the cushions and duvet when you’re not using the sofa as a bed? No problem, get yourself a couch bed with a built-in storage solution underneath, where you can place everything when you don’t need it.

Large sofa - seating for the whole family

Do you need an elegant centrepiece in a larger modern lounge space? Or a place where the entire family can gather for the Friday night pizza party and movie marathon? Then you should be looking at a modular sofas you can put together just how you like it, to make sure there’s enough room for everyone.

2. Activity – how do you use the sofa?

Consider how the sofa will be used in everyday life:

  • Do you often lie on the sofa? Choose a sofa with a deeper seat depth – perfect for naps and long series marathons.
  • Do you often eat dinner on the sofa? A sofa with a shallower seat depth makes it easier to sit upright – complement it with a sturdy coffee table.
  • Do you have a small home? Sofas and footstools with hidden storage – perfect for blankets, pillows or toys.
  • Do you often have visitors, or like to rearrange your furniture? Buildable modules that can be changed when you have guests, the family grows, or you just feel like a change.
  • Do you want to customise the solution? With our planning tool you can design your own sofa solution with modular sofas and chaise longues.

3. Style and shape – choose sofa model and expression

Once you know how many seats you need, you can consider the shape:

  • One or more sofas, or a whole sofa group?
  • Straight sofa, sofa with chaise longue or L/U shaped corner sofa?
  • Timeless, modern or more expressive style?

Also look at the details:

  • High or low armrests
  • High or low backrest
  • High or low legs
  • Fabric or leather – and in what colour?

Shape of your sofa

Make sure to measure your room properly, so you can find a balance between your sofa and the rest of the furniture like armchairs. You want the area to feel calm, not crowded because of the lack of walking space around the sofa. You also want to leave room for a coffee table and a couple of side tables.

Here, you should also decide on the shape of the sofa. Do you have enough room for an L shaped or a U shaped sofa? Or should you opt for a regular 2 seat or 3 seater sofa?

Sofa styles

Once you’ve decided on the size and shape of your sofa, you need to choose a style to compliment the rest of the room and its interior. For example, if you’ve got a modern look going, get yourself a sofa that is more minimalist in style. It’ll create a well-balanced impression.

But if you prefer a bolder style, why not try a patterned fabric or a bright colour like red for your sofa? It could be the perfect addition to really make the room pop. And if you’re going for a complete look, don’t forget to finish your room with beautiful curtains and nice, soft rugs.

If you're having trouble choosing a style, a sofa with a timeless look can be a safe choice, as you'll probably live with it for a long time.

4. Comfort – seat depth, seat height and cushions

Comfort is personal, but a few things are good to keep in mind:

  • Seat height, seat depth and backrest height affect how you sit and lie on the sofa.
  • The materials in the cushions and frame mean that the firmness can vary – from soft and embracing to firm and supportive.
  • Make sure there is room to sit, recline and lie comfortably.

If you visit a store: try sitting, lying down and feeling how the sofa feels on your body before you decide.

5. Upholstery – fabric sofa or leather sofa?

Fabric sofa

  • Often removable and washable covers – practical for stains and everyday use.
  • Easy to change the upholstery when you want to renew the style at home.
  • Many people find fabric to be extra soft and comfortable against the skin.

Leather sofa

  • Often gets a more beautiful patina the more it is used.
  • The leather in our leather sofas is carefully treated to be durable and easy to care for, while preserving the natural feel.
  • To keep the price down, many leather sofas are upholstered with genuine leather on surfaces you touch (seat, back, armrests) and durable artificial leather on other surfaces.
  • We also have sofas made entirely of artificial leather for those of you who want that look.

If you have small children or pets, removable covers are an especially good choice – they are washable, extend the life of the sofa and allow you to easily change the style.

6. Sofa set or single sofa – how do you want to furnish it?

How you furnish with sofas affects both the feel and function of the room:

  • A simple sofa fits well in smaller rooms or as part of a larger furniture arrangement.
  • Two sofas opposite each other create a social zone for conversation.
  • Sofa sets provide flexibility in the number of seats and can be easily rearranged if necessary.
  • Corner sofas or U shaped sofas utilise corners and provide many seats in a relatively small area.

Consider:

  • Deep sofas are comfortable to sit, lie and semi-recline in.
  • Sofas with shallower seat depth and firmer cushions are comfortable when you want to sit more upright.
  • Don't forget to measure the room so that the sofa can fit and leaves air around tables, rugs and other furniture - the room should feel calm and not cramped.
