When the assembled lamp stands next to the packaging, it can be hard to see how it can fit there at all. A part of the explanation is the cross-shaped base. “We realised that we could make a cross instead of a round base – both to save material and to make the lamp dividable. The cross also adds a unique design element.” The lampshade is made of soft plastic and rolled up like a tube in the packaging. When mounted on the lamp base, it spreads the light both evenly and beautifully.

Terrible designReemFirst, it is very tiny, more than it appears. Most importantly though, the shade comes rolled into the opposite side of how it is supposed to be installed, and so: 1. It is incredibly difficult to roll on the other non-glossy and cheap-looking side 2. and, even when going with the glossy side, the tabs to hook the shade into a circular shape don't come together well because it was rolled for so long as a tube, it becomes a triangle shape instead when installed. I placed heavy items on it for two days, and only then it was usable, still not great and not the correct side. I'd opt for another option. Really not worth it. PS: the light for it is quite dim, too.
Works well for the priceMichelleEverything works well, except I decided not to follow the instructions of rolling the lampshade the other way.. it refused to unroll properly even after lots of coaxing. Perhaps if I laid it flat between two heavy pieces of board for a few weeks it would go flat. Anyway I just rolled it inside out opposed to the way its meant to. Doesn't make any difference except the smooth side is in the front.

Big design in a small package
Every now and then you need to think outside the famous box to achieve something innovative. But, when we developed BARLAST lamp, we instead stayed inside the box. The goal was a really good lamp at a really good price, and that made the packaging a decisive starting point. From there, we worked our way backwards with materials and design.
Cecilia Sondell Banke, one of our product engineers involved in the work with BARLAST, explains why the packaging can be so crucial for the price: “Transportation is often an essential part of the product cost. By packing the lamp efficiently, we avoid transporting air, and the total cost becomes lower.”

A lower price must never mean compromises with quality. To secure stability and that BARLAST fulfils all legal demands, we made thorough calculations and tough tests. “The products with the lowest price are often the most challenging to develop. All our specialists need to be onboard from the start, and we have to think through the whole process step by step. But, they are also very creative projects that we learn a lot from. And when it comes to BARLAST it resulted in a really nice lamp in a small package,” Cecilia sums up.
