Why is my furniture sometimes static?

Does your furniture give you the occasional electric shock? Your clothes and furniture become static more quickly when humidity is low, such as on cold winter days or when the heating is on in the house. Try to increase the humidity in the air by, for example, placing plants in the room or hanging a water dish on the heating.

Static electricity is caused by friction between objects made of different materials. Due to friction, your body gradually builds up tension, often without you noticing it. This tension usually leaves your body without you even noticing it.

Low humidity makes it more difficult for electrical charges to leave your body. Because the humidity in the winter is usually lower than in the summer, you can get more electric shocks from your furniture in the winter. It is a normal phenomenon and will go away by itself when the humidity in the room increases.
