The IKEA return policy
Our return policy terms and conditions have been updated as of July 1, 2023.
We’ve detailed everything about our generous IKEA return policy on this page that apply regardless of how you made your purchase.
Too big? Too small? Too something else? If you’re not completely satisfied or simply just change your mind, you can return a new and unopened IKEA product within 365 days, with proof of purchase, for a full refund to the original method of payment. No rush, no complicated conditions.
We think everyone should be able to test any product, so we take back opened products within 90 days – even assembled ones, as long as it’s in unused and re-saleable condition (at IKEA’s sole discretion) with proof of purchase. Custom-cut fabrics and custom countertops are excluded. Mattress purchases may be exchanged one time within 90 days under our Mattress Love it or Exchange it policy.
Some conditions apply. IKEA reserves the right to refuse a return (or exchange) or offer a refund card only. Government photo ID may be required.

Returning opened IKEA products
We think everyone should be able to test any product, so we take back opened products within 90 days – even assembled ones as long as it’s in unused and re-saleable condition (in IKEA’s sole discretion) with proof of purchase.
Products that are assembled with no evidence of use will be refunded to original method of payment.
Products that have been tested and tried with some traces of use will be refunded on an IKEA refund card.
IKEA products that can’t be returned
Cut fabric, custom countertops as well as products that have been heavily used, dirty, stained, damaged and/or modified are excluded from our IKEA return policy. IKEA reserves the right to refuse a return (or exchange) or offer a refund card only, whereby IKEA, in its sole discretion, suspects abuse of the return policy.
Things to note: IKEA returns, IKEA refunds and IKEA exchanges
IKEA return policy conditions:
- To ensure that your return goes smoothly, we ask you to bring your proof of purchase when you return an item and if possible the packaging
- Custom cut fabrics and custom countertops cannot be returned.
- Can't find your proof of purchase? We will refund on an IKEA refund card the lowest selling price in the last year.
- You have proof of purchase from an IKEA store abroad? If the article is part of our range we will refund on an IKEA refund card to the lowest selling price in the last year.
- Products belonging to one of the categories below can be returned within 90 days and will be refunded on an IKEA refund card.
- Products from the Swedish Food market
- Live plants
- Products purchased in As-is
- An IKEA refund card is valid at all IKEA stores in Canada or on IKEA.ca

- You bought the product more than 365 days ago? It may be eligible for our IKEA Sell-back program
- We offer free IKEA replacement parts in our commitment to prolonging the life of our products.

The IKEA ‘Love it or exchange it’ mattress exchange policy
‘Love it or exchange it’ is our IKEA 90-day trial policy for newly purchased mattresses.
It takes time for you and your new mattress to get used to each other. That's why we give you 90 days to be sure you're compatible. So, after you’ve slept on it a while, you can exchange your mattress if you find it too firm or too soft. When you've found your perfect match, you can sleep easy for years to come with our free 10-year mattress warranty.
Things to note: IKEA mattress exchange
- You can exchange or return your mattress once within 90 days with proof of purchase.
- The only condition is that it’s not dirty, marked or damaged.
- The policy doesn’t apply to bed bases, bed slats or mattress toppers.
- New mattresses often feel a bit too firm, so wait at least a month for your body to get used to the mattress and for the mattress to get used to your body.
- To get the best comfort you also need the right pillow, make sure you have a pillow that suits you and your new mattress.
- Once you’ve found your perfect mattress, it’ll be covered by our 10-year mattress warranty
- If your mattress exchange is an upgrade, you’ll just cover the price difference between the original and the replacement. (Delivery/pickup fees apply)
- If the replacement’s price is lower, we’ll credit the difference to an IKEA refund card for you to use towards a future purchase. (Delivery/pickup fees apply)
We've made some changes to our no-nonsense return policy. For purchases made as of July 1st, 2023, opened and assembled products can be returned or exchanged 90 days from the original date of purchase whereas new and unopened products can be returned or exchanged within 365 days of the original purchase date. If your purchase was made prior to July 1st, 2023? The below policy applies to you:
If you’re not completely satisfied, or simply just change you mind, you can return your products within 365 days. You can return any product, even if you assembled it, as long as it’s in unused and re-saleable condition. Please provide proof of purchase and, if possible, the packaging.
Assembled products may be returned provided your merchandise is not found to be dirty, stained, damaged or abused.
We will refund you by the same method of payment as your original payment. If the returns criteria are not fully met, IKEA reserves the right to refuse a return (or exchange) or offer a refund card only. Government photo ID may be required.

IKEA Canada Mattress Love it or Exchange it Policy – For purchases prior to July 1, 2023
To get the best comfort you also need the right pillow that supports the way you naturally sleep. Make sure you have a pillow that suits you and your new mattress. For additional comfort, and to prolong the life of your IKEA mattress, we also recommend you consider adding a mattress topper.
You may exchange your mattress once within 365 days if you don’t love it, provided that it is not dirty, damaged or abused. Simply take your mattress back to the IKEA store together with your proof of purchase and we will help you find one that suits you better.
If you would like to upgrade your mattress, all we ask is that you pay the difference between the original purchase price and the price of the replacement chosen. If the replacement mattress is lower in price, we will credit the difference to an IKEA refund card for you to use towards a future purchase.
The “Love it or Exchange it” policy does not apply to sofa-bed mattresses, bed bases, bed slats or mattress toppers.
Government-issued photo ID may be required.

Frequently asked questions
You have 365 days for returnsThat's why we give you 365 days to return your purchases. If the item is still in its packaging, we will refund the cost of the item via your original payment method and we'll be able to look for another home for it straight away.
You may exchange your mattress once within 90 days if you don't love it, provided that it is not dirty, marked or damaged. Simply take your mattress back to the IKEA store with your receipt and we will help you find one that suits you better. Please note that initially, your new mattress can seem a bit too firm.
Dirty, stained, damaged, or adapted products are excluded from our IKEA return policy.
Custom countertops unfortunately cannot be returned beyond a certain stage of production. When the paperwork is signed during the sales process, it is stated that any cancellation/return beyond the production step is not possible. Our apologies for this.
Gift and refund cards can be used at any IKEA store in Canada. Gift cards cannot be returned or refunded. The balance cannot be converted into cash. The value on the card(s) cannot be used to pay credit card or IKEA Business account balances.
