As-Is Online allows IKEA customers to browse second-life IKEA items online for the first time ever, with Queensland customers being the first to trial this new shopping experience before it is rolled out to all IKEA Australia stores nationally later this year.

KEA Australia is giving products a second chance with As-Is Online – a first of its kind, sustainable online shopping platform which is good for your home, your wallet and the planet.

As-Is Online allows IKEA customers to browse second-life IKEA items online for the first time ever, with Queensland customers being the first to trial this new shopping experience before it is rolled out to all IKEA Australia stores nationally later this year.

As-Is Online shoppers can expect to find a bargain with discounts ranging from 20-75% off the original product’s price, depending on its condition.

Customers can browse online for discontinued items, gently used and ex-showroom displays, as well as pre-loved products returned through the Buy Back service – where customers can bring back eligible products and receive an IKEA refund card to spend.

Customers can reserve their chosen products online, then head into the selected store to complete the purchase and collect their ‘new’ furniture or homewares from the As-Is area, which is located just before the checkouts.

As-Is Online is part of the ambition for IKEA to become climate positive by 2030, by giving usable items a second chance and a second home, minimising unnecessary waste and environmental impact.

Lachlan Mitchell, Product Recovery Leader, IKEA Australia, said, “Our new As-Is Online platform not only gives easier access than ever before to affordable, second-life items but it also helps our customers meet their own sustainability goals.

“We’ve seen our customers’ interest in the second-hand market grow exponentially over the last few years, and in particular, a strong demand for pre-loved IKEA items.

“As-Is Online is an extension of the already established As-Is area in every store, where shoppers can also find pre-loved products from our Buy-back service which launched in 2019.

We hope it allows our customers live more sustainably and have better everyday lives within the limits of our planet.” The growth of the circular economy offering for IKEA comes as recent research* reveals one in five (22%) Australians buy second-hand goods all or most of the time and 21% completely avoid buying anything new.

IKEA customers in Queensland can access the new As-Is Online platform from Tuesday 26 April via the IKEA website here.

NOTES TO EDITORS: About the research

The INGKA Group & GlobeScan Action on Climate & Inequality Research 2021 aimed to understand the many people’s attitudes, behaviours, and motivators in relation to the three wicked challenges (climate change, unsustainable consumption and inequality) that Ingka (IKEA) tries to tackle.  The research was conducted online using reputable national consumer research panels  to recruit respondents in 32 countries. The total sample size for each of the 32 markets is c. n=1,000. The final sample size for Australia is n=1,053.  Throughout the report we compare 2021 figures for Australia with the 2021 global  average. We also make a direct comparison with previous survey data from the Climate Action 2017 and 2019 research, where applicable.
