Our soup plates and more are made to be scraped clean

Our soup plates also work brilliantly as cereal bowls, salad plates, pasta bowls or bowl-style dishes. In short, for everything that tastes really good. That makes our deep plates and bowls ideal companions on a rainy Sunday in front of the TV (think: popcorn bowl). Or try them with children who still struggle to scoop food onto a fork or spoon from a flat plate. Whatever you use them for, IKEA soup plates are satisfying to eat from, effortless to clean (just put them in your dishwasher) and right at home on any table. Deep plates in black glass, for instance, bring a modern, elegant look to the table. Soft, light colours and Japanese simplicity, on the other hand, let the table setting speak for itself, with a subtle Japandi feel. IKEA soup plates, salad plates, pasta bowls and bowl-style dishes also combine beautifully with other IKEA crockery, cutlery and water glasses. The result is a table that turns heads, whether it's a romantic dinner for two or a family gathering.

Key features and benefits of our soup plates (depending on the model):

Set the table for your next big meal or a relaxed dinner and pick out matching platters and serving bowls at the same time. You'll also find the right cutlery and beautiful glasses and carafes here.

What is a soup plate?

A soup plate is a deep plate with a raised rim, designed for anything that runs. Unlike a flat plate, it gives you plenty of room for soups, stews and broths. The typical depth of around four to sometimes even six centimetres means you can eat from them comfortably and carry them from the kitchen to the dining table without spilling a drop. Despite the name, soup plates also work well for cereal, bowls or pasta, since the deep shape makes eating all of these more comfortable.

What's the difference between a soup bowl and a soup plate?

The main difference is in the shape. A soup plate is defined by its wide, flat rim – known as the 'wing'. It's not just about presentation: it does some real work: it protects your fingers from the heat, lets you carry the plate without touching the soup and stops it spilling over when you bring it to the table. Soup plates are therefore the classic choice for a formally set meal. A soup bowl is deeper, has no rim or only a very narrow one and usually holds a larger volume. Since it has less surface area and retains heat better thanks to its shape, it's ideal for large portions, hearty stews, ramen, snacks or sauces.

How big should a soup plate or pasta bowl be?

The right size depends on what you're using it for. Classic soup plates have a diameter of around 20 to 26 centimetres and a depth of about four to six centimetres. For pasta and bowls, larger models are the better choice. Smaller versions, on the other hand, work well for starters or children's portions. If you're just starting to kit out your kitchen with crockery, a medium size is a safe bet. But if you'd like to pick up a variety of deep plates in one go, different sizes are very handy for different purposes.

Are deep plates only for soup? Or do they work for salads, pasta and more too?

'Deep plate' is an umbrella term for several types of plate. These include soup plates, deep pasta bowls, salad plates and bowl-style dishes. While pasta bowls tend to have a wider rim, bowl-style dishes often have a rounder, more bowl-like shape for poke bowls or smoothie bowls, similar to salad plates. In most cases, the different types differ only in size and design, so you can simply choose whichever suits your taste. These days, all sorts of dishes are served in all sorts of ways. What matters most is that the shape makes eating comfortable, and that you enjoy what's in it.
