Our curtains are like paintings for your windows
Our curtains and voiles are a stylish, affordable way to dress your windows and give you more privacy and control over the light. They help you shape the atmosphere in a room to suit the moment and your mood. Blackout curtains keep out sunlight and harsh artificial light, while also giving you privacy. No one has to look straight into your room. Day curtains, such as lightweight curtains or sheer curtains, can also do a lot for your home. They soften bright sunlight, create a pleasant, uplifting light during the day and give you privacy without blocking out all the light. And what about our panel curtains, which can even help create new zones in your home when used cleverly as room dividers? All models come in a range of colours, patterns and lengths, so you can find the perfect curtains for your bedroom, living room, kitchen or children’s room at IKEA.
Key features and benefits of our curtains and sheers at a glance:
- Ready-made curtains in different standard lengths are ready to hang and can be adjusted if needed.
- Room-darkening curtains give you more privacy without making the room completely dark, which makes them ideal for living spaces.
- Blackout curtains block up to 99% of light and help create restful sleep in bedrooms, guest rooms or children’s rooms.
- Day curtains filter sunlight gently, create a pleasant atmosphere and give you more privacy during the day.
- Discover curtains with tabs, eyelets, heading tape or hooks; different hanging styles create looks from modern to traditional on poles or tracks.

What’s the difference between curtains and voiles?
The terms are often used interchangeably. If you want to be precise, though, there are a few subtle differences. Curtains are usually heavier, more opaque and mainly used for privacy and room darkening. Voiles, on the other hand, are lighter, often semi-transparent, and are more about decoration and gently filtering the light. In the end, what matters most is the look and feel you want for your windows.
What’s the difference between net curtains and voiles?
A net curtain is a specific type of voile, usually made from a very lightweight transparent or semi-transparent fabric. Net curtains are fixed close to the window and usually stay closed. Voiles, on the other hand, can be gathered or drawn to the side. Net curtains give you daytime privacy while letting in as much light as possible. That’s why many people combine them with heavier curtains on gliders for a flexible day-and-night solution.
Which level of light filtering suits which room?
Light filtering is one of the most important things to consider when choosing your new curtains:
- Sheer curtains or voiles let in lots of daylight and create a bright, open feel, which makes them ideal for living and dining areas.
- Privacy curtains give you immediate privacy without making the room too dark, so they work especially well in living rooms or home offices. Do keep in mind that silhouettes may still be visible when it’s dark outside and bright indoors.
- Light-reducing curtains are also opaque and noticeably reduce the amount of light coming in, which gives you an even calmer, more sheltered feel.
- Blackout curtains, which are also opaque, block up to 99% of the light, making them perfect for rooms where restful sleep matters most.
Our tip: use several curtain layers at your windows, so you can adjust the light in your home more easily throughout the day.
What are some good tips for choosing the right curtains for my windows?
When choosing new curtains or sheers, start with what you need them to do. Do you want blackout curtains for better sleep or light-filtering curtains for a cosy feel? It also helps to think about the room. In the living room, lightweight curtains or day curtains often work well. In the bedroom, room-darkening curtains or blackout styles are usually a better choice. If you’re not sure, visit your local IKEA store and we’ll be happy to help you choose the right curtains.
How do I measure the right curtain length?
Measure from the top edge of the curtain pole or track down to where you want the curtain to end. For a classic look, curtains should just touch the floor or finish 1 to 2 cm above it. For kitchen windows, or windows with a chest of drawers underneath, shorter curtains are often a better fit. One useful trick is to hang the pole higher than the window and wider than the width of the window. This can make the room feel larger and the ceiling look higher. To work out the width for your curtains or voiles, measure the width of the window and multiply it by 1.5 to 2 to create enough fullness in the folds.
How do I choose curtains that work with the rest of my home?
Take your lead from the main colours and textures in your furniture and on your walls. Curtains in neutral shades such as white, beige or grey work with almost any style. Accent colours, on the other hand, can create a more eye-catching look. If your furniture is patterned, plain curtains are usually the better choice. If your room is more understated, your curtains can add pattern or texture. Heavier fabrics tend to feel more elegant, while lighter materials create an airy, modern feel. You can also echo the colour or material of your curtains in other textiles around the room, such as a rug, a throw, or a bedspread or bedding for your bed.
What stylish curtain options work well in a modern kitchen?
For kitchen curtains, we recommend light, semi-transparent styles that let in plenty of daylight while still giving you privacy. Alternatively, blinds offer flexible light control and a modern, minimalist look that works well in contemporary kitchens. Easy-care or washable materials are especially useful here, as they make it easier to deal with marks and cooking smells.
Which curtains can make a room look bigger?
Light colours such as white, cream or pastel shades reflect and diffuse light, which helps open up the room visually. Sheer voile curtains let in plenty of daylight and create a sense of lightness. Floor-length curtains create long vertical lines, which can make the room feel taller and more spacious.
Which curtains feel cosy?
Heavy, dense fabrics in warm shades such as terracotta, burgundy or dark grey create an instantly cosy feel. Blackout curtains in muted tones work especially well in bedrooms and living spaces where you want to relax. Velvet or linen-look fabrics add extra texture and depth. Layering different curtain types, such as room-darkening curtains with lightweight voiles, creates maximum cosiness and gives you flexible control over the light.
