Foam & memory foam mattrasses

Foam mattresses spread your body weight more evenly than spring mattresses and promote better blood circulation.

Qualities: Soft, resilient, and made without coils.

Spring mattresses

Spring mattresses use coils to distribute your weight, providing optimal support for the body and eliminating excessive stress.

Qualities: Cooler and more breathable.

Hybrid mattresses

Hybrid mattresses are the best of both worlds, blending innerspring core support with foam comfort, providing a cool comfortable night's sleep.

Qualities: Provide sturdy comfort and pressure relief.

A room lights up. In the center lies a mattress. Quick cuts show scenes from the factory. The room and the mattress appear again. A close‑up reveals spinning metal wires. Coil springs made from the wire are shown in different production environments. Finally, we see the mattress being assembled and a person lying on it. The mattress layers are displayed. Clips from the test lab show the mattress and its materials being tested.

Mattresses that are made to last

For more than 50 years, IKEA engineers have been studying sleep and testing mattresses in our test labs in Älmhult, Sweden.

In the Test Lab, every mattress – regardless of price – goes through the same rigorous test programme. You can feel confident your new mattress is built to last. Here’s how we know:

The test: We simulate a 140 kg (308 lb) person rolling around in bed 50,000 times.

What we measure: We use pressure gauges to check that the springs, frames, and fillings meet our highest standards for strength and durability.

The result: Only mattresses that prove they can stand up to years of use make it to our stores, and are backed by a 10-year warranty.

Debunking the myths around mattresses

Buying a new mattress can be a big commitment. Making the change can be costly, and how can you be sure you've made the right choice for the many sleeps ahead? Let's bust some common myths surrounding our favourite bedtime companion, shall we?

Mattress sizes

Finding the right mattress size and thickness is important for a good night’s sleep, so be sure to confirm the size of our crib, twin, full/double, queen, and king size mattresses to make sure they're right for you. All IKEA mattresses, bed frames and bedding sold in Canada are standard North American sizes.

What's your favourite position in bed (for sleeping)?

Your sleeping position determines which mattress suits you best.

Stomach sleepers

We recommend a firm mattress as it provides extra support for both the neck and the natural s-curve of the spine; which helps prevent neck and back pain.

Back sleepers

We recommend a firm mattress as it prevents the neck and lower back from sinking too deeply, helps keep your spine straight, and provides optimal support in the lumbar region.

Side sleepers

We recommend a medium-firm or plush mattress as it will keep your spine straight, muscles relaxed, and will shape itself around your shoulders and hips.

Mattress comfort guide

Firm? Soft? Or somewhere in between?

We offer different types of mattresses is because people are different. Some prefer a firmer mattress, others are more on the soft side or somewhere in between. The good thing, though, is that you don’t have to worry much about it. Simply try one of our mattresses and your body make the decision.

Need some help figuring out which firmness level is right for you? We'd be happy to help!

Mattress comfort guide

Firm mattresses

A firm mattress will help your back and body stay aligned throughout the night and will provide more sturdiness and support than other mattress types.

Medium firm mattresses

Medium firm mattresses provide similar body alignment and sturdiness but are softer than a firm mattresses and more easily adapt to your body contours.

Soft & plush mattresses

Plush mattresses are soft and cloud-like, providing lots of cushioning and comfort for those who do not require firm and sturdy back support.
