IKEA continues to celebrate creativity through the flower power of the 60s and 70s with the 4th edition of the Nytillverkad range

Range news12 March 2024
Celebrating the spirit of flower power, boldness and creativity of the 60s and 70s, the fourth launch of the Nytillverkad collection is yet another nod to the past, available in-store and online, across Australia in April 2024.

Inspired by the timeless beauty of floral motifs and the spirit of optimism, IKEA announces the fourth launch of Nytillverkad, the collection which brings back a selection of design icons. This new edition will include new versions of iconic products developed by influential designers like Gillis Lundgren, Charlotte Rude, Hjördis Olsson-Une and Göta Trägårdh.

This edition of the Nytillverkad collection channels a time of optimism and free-spiritedness. The launch features the revival of Göta Trägårdh's iconic floral patterns introduced in the IKEA catalogue in the early '70s and relaunched now in the KRANSMALVA and SANDETERNELL textiles. The collection celebrates creativity, self-expression, and positivity, encouraging people to be more optimistic and confident.

One of the highlights of this launch is the ÖNNESTAD armchair ($149), a modern reincarnation of the iconic GOGO, a steel-tube easy chair that was first introduced in the IKEA catalogue in 1972 and was in the range for over ten years. "We wanted to make a chair that was colourful, soft, and comfortable," says Charlotte Rude, one of the designers behind the ÖNNESTAD armchair.

The ÖNNESTAD armchair is now made with high-strength steel, requiring less than half of the original steel amount while maintaining the same quality, function, and feel. ”We went from 6,8 kg steel to 3,3 kg, giving us twice as many armchairs for the same amount of material,” says Håkan Käll, Material and Innovation Developer at IKEA of Sweden.

High-strength steel has better mechanical properties than conventional steel and enables the production of lighter designs. Using high-strength steel in furniture makes it possible to reduce the weight of the furniture and frequently adapt the design. More lightweight structures lead to lower material consumption reducing environmental impact, since less material needs to be produced and transported.

In addition to these products, the Nytillverkad collection includes other reimagined classics such as the DYKARKLOCKA pendant lampshade ($99), taking inspiration from the design from 1964 known as TIVOLI; GARNANÄS coffee table ($99), the updated version of the popular POP table from 1968; PRIMÄRSKOG plant stand ($89), a new version of STREGA plant stand, first introduced in 1962, and many other truly iconic products, each reflecting the IKEA commitment to timeless design.

"We are excited to bring back these beloved designs and introduce them to a new generation of customers," says Karin Gustavsson, Creative leader of the Nytillverkad collection. "With the new colourful and bold edition of products, we hope to inspire creative experiments, courage, and positivity in homes around the world."

The Nytillverkad collection is a celebration of vintage designs reimagined for the needs of today and tomorrow.

The fourth launch of the Nytillverkad collection will be available across Australia in store and online starting in April 2024.
