IKEA encourages customers to save more than money this Green Friday

Corporate news19 November 2021
Building on the success of last year’s Buy Back Friday campaign, IKEA Australia today announces its new Green Friday campaign - where customers who sell back an unwanted IKEA product will receive additional value on an IKEA refund card to spend on something they need or love.

In Australia, IKEA Family members will receive +50% on a refund card when they generate a quote through the IKEA Buy Back service between 25 November – 5 December 2021 and return the furniture between 25 November and 31 December 2021. In Victoria, IKEA Richmond and Springvale will not be included in the offer.

With $5.4 billion dollars expected to be spent instore and online in the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales frenzy event in Australia1, IKEA is also encouraging customers to save more than money by purchasing from the thousands of pre-loved items on offer, and never pay more than 50 per cent of the original price when shopping at IKEA on Buy Back products.

According to recent research by Ingka Group and GlobeScan, almost 8 out of 10 Australians (78%) are willing to take more action on climate change. 1 in 5 Australians buy secondhand goods all or most of the time (22%) or avoid buying anything new (21%).

With Green Friday, IKEA wants to show people that taking positive steps towards a more sustainable life can be affordable and convenient. Giving used items a second life and buying pre-loved products are just some of things that we all can do to lower our climate footprint.

In Australia, last year’s Buy Back Friday campaign saw 10,000 products returned in one week, surpassing the total for the entire year prior. 85 per cent of items were resold in the campaign period, indicating IKEA customers were not only passionate about giving their furniture a second life but also buying pre-loved IKEA products at a great price.

This initiative alone helped to divert a potential 178 tons of waste from landfill.

Ryan Burman, Commercial Activity Leader said, “We want to build on what we started with Buy Back Friday last year. For the second year, we’re incentivising customers to extend the life of their pre-loved IKEA products through the Buy Back service and encouraging them to choose pre-loved items from our As-Is section when they shop. The service encourages customers to give their furniture a second life and potentially divert from landfill, and in turn, also provides shoppers with more affordable and sustainable product solutions for their space.”

IKEA Australia recently announced the rollout of instore and online circular hubs to keep IKEA products in use for as long as possible, promoting systems of reuse and sharing in a circular economy.

In early 2022, IKEA Australia will pilot a new ‘As-is’ online platform. IKEA Family members will be able to browse pre-loved IKEA products online and ‘reserve’ items they wish to purchase before heading to collect these at the in-store circular hub.

Last financial year (FY21), more than 30,000 products which equals roughly 300 ton of furniture was potentially diverted from landfill last FY thanks to the Buy Back service.

Mellisa Hamilton, Sustainability Manager IKEA Australia, said, “It’s clear the interest Australians have in the secondhand economy is growing and we see a strong demand from our customers for pre-loved IKEA products. We’re selling these products just as quickly as we’re receiving them returned from customers in the Buy Back service. People are realising the many benefits to buying secondhand products, and we look forward to evolving this service in the future with As-is online.”

The development of these services responds to changing consumer behaviours, with a growing trend towards second-hand sales that has only been accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Customers can visit Used Furniture Buy Back Program Australia - IKEA to generate a quote before heading instore to the circular hub to take back their pre-loved furniture and receive a refund card.
