Select the right size

As you shop, consider your room size and furniture layout to help choose an area rug that fits your space.

• A living room rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and armchairs to rest on it. This helps connect everything into one defined seating area.
• In a dining room, your rug should extend beyond the dining table so that all dining chairs stay on it even when they’re pulled out.
• Bedroom rugs should extend beyond the sides or foot of the bed to add warmth and comfort when you wake up.

Rug pile height

Smooth, plush or somewhere in between? Pile height refers to the length of the rug fibers, which affects how it feels, how easy it is to care for and where it works best. While measurements can vary, rug pile heights generally fall into three categories:

• Low-pile rugs (up to about ¼”): Smooth, durable and easy to vacuum, these rugs are ideal for entryways, dining rooms, kitchens and other hardworking spaces.
• Medium-pile rugs (about ¼” – ½”): Offer a balance of softness and practicality, making them a popular choice for living room rugs.
• High-pile rugs (about ½” and higher): Perfect for bedroom rugs or areas where comfort comes first, but their longer fibers may require a little extra care.

Materials matter when it comes to area rugs. A living room rug needs to stand up to movie nights and daily life, while a bedroom rug is all about soft landings when you get out of bed.
