A rug with ancient roots and modern-day function

The whole world loves oriental rugs, and so do we. JÄRNVÄG is fondly inspired by tradition, not least through the machine-woven pattern that’s easy to coordinate with different styles. While we were at it, we also added a few qualities to make it stand up to everyday wear and tear.

A handwoven jute rug with a lot of heart

In partnership with the social business Karupannya, this rug was designed to help create work for people living on the riverbanks of Bangladesh, a region heavily affected by global warming. The rug is handwoven from undyed jute and cotton with details in colored wool, making it both decorative and durable.

Area rugs for every sense of style

We work with a variety of talented designers to keep our indoor rugs collection fresh, fun and full of unique options year-round. Whether you’re updating your look any time of the year, or preparing for a holiday, you’ll find an assortment of modern rug designs to suit every preferred aesthetic, from Scandinavian to modern to farmhouse, and every style in between.

Rugs that help a space take shape

A staple in nearly every home, the reasons we all love and use area rugs are as numerous as the options available in our selection. And while we love the color and warmth area rugs provide, we think one of their most impressive benefits is helping define the borders of a space within a room.

Whether you live in a studio apartment or large open-concept home, defining spaces within that larger area can sometimes prove difficult. Area rugs help to ground a space, serving as the full stage or a focal point.

Exploring the studio apartment example, using separate rugs in the living and sleeping area help to make a visual separation, no walls required. And for the open floor plan example, a large area rug can serve as the centerpiece of a furniture grouping. Suddenly, a space-within-a-space has been clearly defined and can function as a “room” without borders.

How to choose a rug

The right rug does more than complete a room. It can soften every step, bring furniture together and make your space feel more like home. Here are just a few factors to consider when choosing an area rug.

Select the right size

As you shop, consider your room size and furniture layout to help choose an area rug that fits your space.

Don’t overlook shape, either. Rectangular area rugs work for many layouts, while rounded options can soften corners or help define a smaller space.

Rug pile height

Smooth, plush or somewhere in between? Pile height refers to the length of the rug fibers, which affects how it feels, how easy it is to care for and where it works best. While measurements can vary, rug pile heights generally fall into three categories:

Best materials for rugs

Materials matter when it comes to area rugs. A living room rug needs to stand up to movie nights and daily life, while a bedroom rug is all about soft landings when you get out of bed.

Popular rug materials include:

Choosing a rug color

The color of your rug can quietly pull a room together or steal the spotlight.

For a cohesive look, look for an area rug that complements the colors in your sofa, bedding, curtains or existing decor. Want to make more of a statement? Colorful, modern rugs can add contrast and personality.

Real life matters, too. In busy homes with kids, pets or plenty of foot traffic, patterned or multicolored rugs can help camouflage everyday dust and small messes between cleanings.

Area rugs that make an impression

When you’re installing wall-to-wall carpeting, it makes sense to choose a neutral color that won’t overwhelm your space or your senses. But the exact opposite can be true for smaller area rugs.

Thanks to their smaller size and the ease of switching them up regularly, investing in a few fun and colorful rug options can elevate the look and feel of any room. Consider a bold abstract pattern rug for a contemporary look, or have fun with striped rugs, geometric rugs and more. There’s no wrong way to rug!
