Defining a space within a room

Rugs, especially large and extra large rugs, can serve several purposes in a room. A large rug can help create boundaries between different zones, particularly in open-plan living areas, and anchor furniture pieces, such as a sofa or dining table, which can make a space look more organised and cohesive.

A large rug can also add a layer of comfort to a room, making it more inviting. It can be particularly useful in spaces where you spend a lot of time standing, such as kitchens or home offices, or in rooms where you wish to reduce noise levels, like bedrooms or home offices. 

Rugs can be a focal point of a room; it is a statement piece that immediately draws attention. A rug’s colour, pattern, and texture play a key role in helping tie together different elements of a room, such as artwork, curtains, or upholstery.

Selecting the right rug

A rug is one of the first decorative elements that people notice as they walk into a room, which is why, decorating your space with a large rug can be a great way to add a unique and personal touch to your home décor.

However, choosing the right rug for each room is not always an easy task and there are often many factors to considers including, but not limited to, function and dimension.

When selecting a large rug, make sure it is the right size for the desired space. Keep in mind the dimensions of the room and the placement of furniture in it. Choose a rug that is large enough to anchor the space but not so large that it overwhelms it. 

Large rugs also come in a variety of styles, from traditional to modern, and can feature a range of patterns, colours, and textures. Consider the existing decor of your room and choose a rug that complements or contrasts with it in a way that adds visual interest and depth to the space.

Lastly, if you are looking to add texture and depth to your space, consider layering a smaller rug on top of the large rug in a complementary colour or pattern or using a runner to connect different areas of the room. Mix and match different sized rugs (to add dimensions), rugs with different textures (for a more sophisticated look) or handmade rugs (to add a pop of colour).
