IKEA x Marker Wadden
Marker Wadden: a unique nature reserve from the Dutch conservation organisation Natuurmonumenten in the Markermeer lake. Four zero-energy holiday homes were constructed on the harbour island using sustainable construction methods and have been available to rent from Landal GreenParks since the spring of 2020. The houses were furnished by IKEA.
Nature has found a new home on the natural shores of the Marker Wadden islands, both above and below the water. The islands are both a natural paradise for fish and birds and a wonderful place to relax. Everyone is very welcome to visit the harbour island of Marker Wadden. The island is home to four zero-energy holiday homes, which were constructed using sustainable methods. The houses can accommodate four to five people and will be rented out by Landal GreenParks. All of the rental income will be reinvested in the local nature.
Island cabins with a more sustainable design
By using energy-efficient equipment and lighting, water-saving taps and products made from natural and recycled materials, we show that a more sustainable life at home (or on holiday) goes hand in hand with design and comfort. In this way you contribute to a more sustainable life at home.
Did you know ...
- The wood used to build the houses comes from Natuurmonumenten’s own forests?
- The night lights are from IKEA, but the unique fixtures are also made of wood from Natuurmonumenten’s own forests?
Interior designer Evke tells us about the furnishings
During my first visit to Marker Wadden, I learnt that being outside, experiencing and discovering the surrounding nature is an important part of staying on the island.
The island possesses a unique atmosphere and has so many wonderful colours – colours that I wanted to reflect in the interiors of the holiday homes. I wanted to create that feeling of being in the great outdoors even inside the houses.
I chose colours that reflect the sky, sand dunes and vegetation that you can see outside.”
Evke
This colour scheme creates a peaceful and cosy atmosphere that is full of light. You get a wonderful view of the outside throughout the houses, which really immerses you in the environment. Materials such as linen, untreated wood, rattan and jute reflect the ruggedness and simplicity of nature. The high-quality furniture was selected with sustainability in mind. Even though the holiday homes have been designed to minimise the impact on the island, I tried to incorporate as much comfort and convenience as possible.
Less is often more if you choose high-quality products that can meet all of the needs and desires of your guests during their stay.
I see the design of the houses as a way to help guests become more aware of the nature around them, as well as their own needs. A minimalist design can bring peace, quiet and awareness – all of which are important in life.
