Sustainability Report IKEA Switzerland
IKEA’s vision is to create a better everyday life for many people. To this end, we work every day to make IKEA better – for people, the environment and our company. To this end, IKEA Switzerland sets targets, evaluates the performance that contributes to them and reports openly and transparently on its endeavours in three ESG pillars: Environment, Social and Governance.
Environment
We only have one planet, the home we all share. We are committed to playing our part in tackling the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, use of resources and water scarcity.
What we are proud of
- We reduced our food waste: Pre consumer food waste is now 6.94 g per portion (FY23: 8.21 g), and we reached our target of 8 g.
- We recycle a large share of our waste: 78.2% of operational waste is recycled, and 75% of total waste does not go to incineration or landfill.
- More furniture gets a second life, as our Secondhand Service took back 42’500 items in FY25 (FY23: 19,200), above our target of 25’000 items.
- 96.6% of the energy we use comes from renewable sources, and our operations have used 100% renewable electricity for the past five years.
- In FY25, 36% of the food we served was plant‑based (FY23: 34%), reflecting a broader and more popular plant‑based offer.
Challenges we are addressing
- We reduced our own climate emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 44% compared to 2016 but did not meet our FY25 goal because of leaks from cooling systems, so we are replacing these systems faster to lower future emissions.
- 45% of our home deliveries are made with zero‑emission vehicles, and to reach 90% by 2028 we need more charging points, better winter access and more electric trucks. We are working with partners to close these gaps.
- Our water use is 6.7 litres per visitor, above our goal of 5.9 litres, and we now track our water use more closely to find and reduce unnecessary consumption.
- Our recycling rate is 75%, but we still generate too much waste and wood waste is difficult to recycle, so we are testing new solutions and analysing mixed waste to improve over time.
- We do not yet have a local biodiversity strategy for Switzerland, and we are developing a strategy and plan to start from FY26.
Social
We are determined to be a force for good by helping to create a fairer and more equal society – and better lives for our co-workers, workers in our supply chain and customers.
What we are proud of
- Our management team has a gender balance with 41% men and 59% women, and our store managers have kept a 50:50 gender balance for ten years.
- 89% of co‑workers say they feel part of an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome and can be themselves.
- We increased our minimum wage for a 40‑hour week from CHF 4,000 to CHF 4,300 in FY25 to better reflect living costs.
- We have not found any cases of child labour in our direct and indirect supply chain so far, and we regularly carry out risk checks and follow up with suppliers.
- We support refugees in Switzerland since 2016, and our programmes have helped 31 people per year (FY24 and FY25) enter the job market
Challenges we are addressing
- 83% of co‑workers felt inspired and energised by their work, which is below our ambition, so we are using survey feedback to plan simple, concrete improvements.
- Our stores and offices are not yet fully accessible for people with disabilities, and together with procap we are identifying barriers and have started to adapt our Service Office in Spreitenbach and our store in Rothenburg.
Governance
We are committed to doing business ethically and using new technologies responsibly. We expect everyone at IKEA Switzerland to live our values every day.
What we are proud of
- 840 co-workers took part in the AI training in FY25 (FY24: 198), which helps them understand how to use AI responsibly.
- 88% of co‑workers completed the Code of Conduct refresher training in FY25 and refreshed their knowledge of rules and values.
- We train all co‑workers in sensitive roles on corruption risks and have reached 100% coverage for anti‑corruption training in these roles.
