Getting started

What is the gateway?

  • The gateway is a small hub that connects your light sources to your TRÅDFRI App via your home Wi-Fi network, so that you can control your lights from a mobile device anywhere in your home. The TRÅDFRI App will not control your IKEA Smart lighting without the gateway.

How do I change the pre-set language on the app?

  • Go to settings (the gear icon in the upper right corner of the home screen). Then go to language settings and pick the language of your choice.

Can I control my light sources from the TRÅDFRI App when I’m not at home?

  • No, you can only control your light sources when you are within your Wi-Fi range (local network).


Installing and connecting

I bought a gateway and a light bulb, I cannot seem to find the light bulb with the TRÅDFRI gateway?

  • You need to have a steering device with the system, and you need to add a light source to the gateway with the steering device. You will be guided step by step how to do this in the TRÅDFRI App.

I connected my light source to the TRÅDFRI Gateway by using my remote control. Do I need the remote control anymore or can I just use the TRÅDFRI App?

  • You can steer your lights without the remote control if you disconnect the steering device from the Gateway after you have used it to pair your light sources. However, if you decide later on to add more light sources to your system, you will need a steering device again.

I followed the instructions and have paired the steering device (remote control, wireless dimmer and motion sensor) to the TRÅDFRI Gateway but I don’t see the bulb in the app.

  • Yes. You can also connect your gateway by registering the gateway ID code manually in the app. You’ll find this code on the backside of your gateway.

How many family members can simultaneously control the light sources from smart devices using the TRÅDFRI App?

  • The TRÅDFRI gateway supports up to 10 smart devices connected at the same time.

I’m having trouble downloading the TRÅDFRI App.

  • Check the latest compatibility information in the App Store or Google Play.

I cannot add the light source into the TRÅDFRI gateway.

  • To be able to add a light source to your Gateway you need to have a steering device (remote control, wireless dimmer or motion sensor). Follow the instruction in the app, meaning first add your steering device to your gateway, and then pair your light sources with that device.

Do I need to have a TRÅDFRI gateway to use TRÅDFRI light sources?

  • No, you can control any TRÅDFRI light source with a TRÅDFRI steering device (remote control, wireless dimmer or motion sensor). You need a TRÅDFRI gateway to control TRÅDFRI light sources with the TRÅDFRI App.

When should I disconnect from the Gateway in the app settings and what will happen when I press it?

  • You would press “disconnect” from the Gateway if you want connect to another Gateway. Think about the scenario of having one Gateway at work and one at home. In order to jump from one to the other you need to “log off”. All settings (moods groups) will be stored in the Gateways, without the possibility to transfer them from one to another.

I cannot connect to my app/phone to my gateway. What am I doing wrong?

    1. Check that the gateway’s power is on. If not, check that the power supply cable is correctly attached.
    2. Verify that the gateway is connected to your home router via a cable and that the router has internet connectivity.
    3. To continue, you need to download the TRÅDFRI App from Apple App Store or Android Play Store and follow the step-by-step guide in the app to set-up your gateway.
    4. Follow instructions in the app on how to set-up your gateway and how to connect the steering devices and light sources.
    5. Find the QR code on the backside of your gateway and scan it with your mobile phone following the instruction in the app. If you have a problem scanning the code, you can type the gateway code manually. You’ll find the gateway code on the backside of your gateway. If you still have problem, check that all cables are connected and try again.
    6. Secure that your mobile phone is connected to your Wi-Fi network; the same network the gateway is connected to.
    7. If you have problems, set-up the gateway by following the steps in the app. You can reset your products by doing a factory reset and do the installation again.

    I accidentally changed my light settings in the App. How do I get my settings back?

    • The best way to save your light settings is to save them as moods. Once you have done this, if somebody changes them you can go into the Moods screen, press on your saved mood and all the lights will go back to the way you prefer them. Keep in mind that all the data is saved in your Gateway and in your network, so no cloud back-up is available for you to get saved data from 2 months ago.


    Updating and resetting

    Where do I find the version number of the TRÅDFRI App?

    • In the TRÅDFRI App you can find the version number at the bottom of the settings page under “Clear all settings”.
      In the App Store and on Google Play, there is a section called “Version” and you can find the version number there.

    What do I do if a device fails during an update?

    • Try again. Turn ON all the light sources and make sure that there is a battery in the battery-operated products. It’s possible to retry an update from the Update devices screen inside the TRÅDFRI App at any time. If the Gateway loses contact to the router while updating, check to see if your Gateway is connected to your router and that the router is connected to the internet.

    If I do a factory reset of the Gateway, what happens to the system (connected light sources) and the TRÅDFRI App?

    • The factory reset will clean up all data saved in the Gateway and make it re-form a new ZigBee network. It will also work on the latest Over the Air (OTA) image it updated to so far, and revert to the factory flashed firmware. From a user perspective, this can only be triggered by using the pinhole-button. The rest of the system is left intact, meaning you can continue to use the rest of the devices in the system.

    I want to move to a new house and take my Smart lighting system with me. What can I do to reset and start over again?

    • There is an option in the App called “Clear All Settings” that can be used to erase all your personized settings from the system and have it go back to factory default settings.
