IKEA sliding wardrobes for small and large rooms

Compared with classic hinged-door wardrobes, sliding wardrobes offer a big advantage: they take up far less depth, because their doors slide sideways within the frame rather than opening into the room. That makes them ideal for small, narrow rooms, though they're just as worth considering in a large one. It leaves more room for a clothes rail, a dressing table, a chest of drawers or other storage in your dressing room. An IKEA sliding wardrobe also creates a calm overall look and keeps your clothes safe from dust and moths. And one more thing: behind those doors, you can skip the tidying now and then. Nobody will know. That would be a little trickier with an open wardrobe. Space-saving, hygienic and tidy, in other words. Want to know more? The details are just below.

Key features and benefits of our IKEA sliding wardrobes (depending on the model):

Fancy something clean in white, or striking in modern black? Do you need a spacious sliding wardrobe or a small, space-saving one? At IKEA you'll find your new sliding wardrobe. And if you want something made to measure, you've come to the right place too. At IKEA you can not only put together your wardrobe to your own taste, but also combine it with many different sliding doors.

What's the advantage of a sliding wardrobe over a hinged-door wardrobe?

The biggest advantage is space: hinged and pivot doors need up to 60 cm of swing clearance, while sliding doors simply glide sideways and need none at all. That makes a sliding wardrobe a great choice in a compact bedroom or a narrow room. And even if you have more space to play with, you could put an upholstered bench in front, lay down a cosy rug or fit your dressing table into the same corner. There's a visual bonus too: the large, uninterrupted front surfaces have a calming effect and, with a mirror, can even add extra depth to the room.

What's the difference between a sliding door wardrobe and a suspended door wardrobe?

These two terms are often used interchangeably – but there is a technical difference: with a sliding door wardrobe, the doors run on fixed rails attached to the frame at both the top and bottom. With a suspended door wardrobe, the door hangs only from an upper track and doesn't touch the floor – it 'floats', in other words.

What minimum width do I need to allow for a sliding wardrobe?

As a rule, a sliding wardrobe should be at least 100 cm wide – so the doors can overlap and still leave enough of an opening to use the interior comfortably. That's why many IKEA sliding wardrobes start at 100 to 120 cm. If you want the widest possible access to all areas of your wardrobe and plenty of storage space overall, a larger sliding wardrobe (150 cm to 250 cm or more) is well worth it. With our online planner you can try out different widths and interior configurations virtually in the space you have available before you decide.

How deep should my sliding wardrobe be?

Whether for a dressing room, hallway or bedroom: a sliding wardrobe designed to hang clothes on rails ideally needs a depth of at least 58 cm. That gives wider tops and coats enough room without catching on the back of the door. If you mainly want to store folded textiles or shoes, a shallower depth of, say, 43 cm – combined with clever interior fittings such as drawers or baskets – can also work very well. We're happy to help you choose and configure your wardrobe, with or without a mirror. Feel free to book a free planning appointment.

Which material is best for my sliding wardrobe?

The choice of material depends on your priorities. Coated chipboard is long-lasting, easy to care for and available at IKEA in many finishes – from muted white through grey tones to warm wood effects. At IKEA you'll find many affordable sliding wardrobes made from this material. For a particularly elegant feel, take a look at our sliding wardrobe doors with glass panels or a mirror. Instead of a mirrored panel, you can also put up a stylish freestanding mirror. Just bear in mind that it takes up extra space.

How can I make my dressing room or bedroom cosier around the sliding wardrobe?

There are plenty of lovely ideas that can complement your dressing room or dressing area. How about a comfortable armchair or a small stool that doubles as a surface and a seat? Or perhaps a floor lamp, so there's always light when you need it? On a side table you could place a scented candle or a vase of flowers – that makes the daily hunt for the perfect outfit just a little more enjoyable. Decorate with colours and objects you love, and the whole space around your wardrobe will feel instantly cosier.
