IKEA drinking glasses – for water, wine and everything that brings you joy

Adults are generally advised to drink around 2.5 to 3 litres of water a day. That’s quite a lot – and on a busy day it’s easy to forget. Some people even set drink reminders on their phone. Here's another approach: treat yourself to some IKEA glasses and keep them where you can see them. There's hardly a nicer reminder to drink than a beautiful glass within reach. IKEA drinking glasses aren’t just for water, though. Juice, iced tea and alcoholic drinks all find their perfect match here too. Varied designs, lovely colours and a wide range of sizes make our water glasses true all-rounders. For everyday, for celebrations, for any moment at all.

Key features and benefits of our drinking glasses (depending on the model):

Discover coloured water glasses for extra contrast on the table, bring a touch of Tuscany to your summer party with water glasses that also work beautifully for table wine, or treat yourself to something special in a stylish glass at the end of the day. Long drink, whisky or cocktail – we have the glassware for it.

What size should water glasses be?

Drinking enough is essential – so it makes sense to choose glasses that make it easier to reach your daily target. As a general guide, smaller water glasses of 20 to 35 cl are ideal for formal occasions and compact table settings. Medium-sized glasses of 35 to 45 cl work perfectly for everyday use. Large drinking glasses from 45 cl upwards give you room for ice cubes, fruit and creative drink mixes. The best solution is often a mix of different sizes. That way you’re ready for every situation – from a quick sip of water to a long, leisurely summer drink. Matching carafes and jugs finish the set off nicely.

What are the different types of drinking glasses called?

There are many different types of drinking glasses for specific drinks. The classic water glass is the everyday all-rounder. Tumblers are low, wide glasses, ideal for whisky or cocktails. Long drink glasses are tall and slim – perfect for drinks with lots of ice. Stemless wine glasses with a rounded bowl offer a modern way to serve red and white wine. And refined crystal glasses add an elegant note to special occasions.

How many glasses should I buy in a set?

For most households, we recommend at least 4 to 8 glasses per glass type so you always have enough, even if one breaks. For parties and larger gatherings, sets of 12 are very practical. One advantage of buying glass sets is that you get a consistent look across the table – and a spare to hand if one breaks.

Are IKEA drinking glasses heat-resistant?

Some IKEA drinking glasses are designed to be heat-resistant and are ideal for hot drinks like tea, coffee or punch. These glasses can handle changes in temperature without cracking. Always check the product description carefully to make sure you choose the right model. Heat-resistant water glasses can also be used creatively – for example, as holders for tealights or candles to create a cosy atmosphere on the dining table, coffee table or chest of drawers. It’s a simple way to get even more use out of your glasses.

How can I make cloudy drinking glasses clear again?

Cloudy glasses are usually caused by limescale deposits or detergent residue. Soaking them in a bath of vinegar water or treating them with citric acid gently removes the build-up. To stop it coming back, a good rinse aid in the dishwasher can help. It’s also worth checking the temperature settings on your machine. Dishwasher-safe drinking glasses can cope with high temperatures between 60°C and 75°C and often need them to come out really hygienically clean.

How should I place wine glasses and water glasses on the table?

The classic rule is this: the water glass goes above and slightly to the right of the knife (you can use the knife tip as a reference point). The wine glass is placed to the right of it, slightly offset. If you’re using more than one wine glass, they’re arranged diagonally to the right. For modern, relaxed table settings, you can interpret these rules more loosely. One more tip: beautiful drinking glasses look their best on a tablecloth that suits the season, or a stylish runner – a simple way to dress your table up for special occasions.
