Divan beds

Sleep like royalty on IKEA divan beds and platform beds

Height, comfort, design: divan beds and platform beds are something special. With a divan bed, the mattress doesn't sit on a slatted base but on a raised divan base with built-in springs. A platform bed gives you the same elegant, raised look, but here the mattress rests on sprung slats.

IKEA divan beds bring dreamy comfort and style to your bedroom

A king-size bed has a certain something, doesn't it? Just the dimensions alone: at 180 by 200 cm, there's plenty of room for everyone on your tall, cosy and seriously comfortable IKEA divan bed. Prefer something a little smaller and snugger? No problem: our divan beds also come in a space-saving 140 by 200 cm or a middle-ground 160 by 200 cm. Either way, you'll find tall beds that feel lovely to sleep on and add an elegant touch to your bedroom. From the upholstery and the base to the legs, lovely details and quality craftsmanship turn every divan bed into a real eye-catcher. Alongside affordable divan beds, this page also features our platform beds. They give you the same raised lying position and that classy, hotel-like flair of a divan bed, but here the mattress rests on sprung slats rather than a divan base. Fancy sleeping in the kind of comfort you'd find in a good hotel? Looking for a bed that becomes the centrepiece of your bedroom? This is where you'll find your new divan or platform bed.

Key features of our divan beds and platform beds (depending on the type):

You can dress up your divan or platform bed and make it even cosier with blankets and pillows, bed linen, fitted sheets and a bedspread. Or take a look at our decorative cushions, which can add a finishing touch to your handsome divan or platform bed in white, grey, beige or livelier shades. We've also got matching bedside tables, bedroom lights, rugs and blackout curtains for undisturbed nights. By the way: you'll find lots more tips in our divan bed guide.

What should I look for when buying a divan bed?

The first question: what size suits you and your bedroom? A divan bed in 140 by 200 cm is ideal for anyone sleeping on their own. 160 by 200 cm is a nice compromise for two and a real stretch-out for one. And at a regal 180 by 200 cm, your divan bed becomes a proper haven, where you can stretch out fully without disturbing the person next to you. The second question: which mattress do you want? You can go for a ready-made pairing or pick out your own personal comfort mattress. At your local IKEA store, we're happy to advise on firmness, materials and more. Or you can give our sleep comfort guide a go online. Third question: what kind of springs should the divan base have? The product descriptions tell you more there. A sturdy frame, good covers and finishes matter too. And last but not least: the bed height (more on that below) and the design. Would you like a white, grey or beige divan bed in Scandi style? Or a softer pop of colour for a livelier room? Another tip: have a look at our platform and divan beds with built-in storage – that way, even a king-size might fit into a smaller bedroom, since it doubles up as a chest of drawers or a wardrobe.

What's the difference between a divan bed and an upholstered bed?

While divan beds and upholstered beds (especially platform beds) are similar in design and bed height, they differ in what the mattress actually rests on. With a divan bed, the mattress sits on a divan base, a box with its own built-in springs. That's what creates the wonderfully soft feel of sleeping on a divan bed with its double-sprung setup. With an upholstered bed, on the other hand, the mattress rests on a very comfortable slatted base with classic sprung slats.

So if it's mainly the height and the look you're after, an upholstered or platform bed is already a great choice. If you also want that springy feel, a divan bed is your best option. By the way, you can fit both versions with a topper – it helps regulate temperature and moisture as you sleep, and it can even soften the feel of the mattress slightly – all while protecting it.

One more thing both versions share: the styling options. Whether it's pillows and blankets, bed linen or fitted sheets, decorative cushions, bedside lights, bedside tables or a wonderfully soft rug by the bed: at IKEA, you'll find everything you need to turn your new divan or upholstered bed into a dreamy place to unwind.

What's the right bed height for a platform or divan bed?

Platform and divan beds typically give you a bed height of around 50 to 65 cm. Depending on the height of the sleeper, you can pick exactly the height that makes getting into and out of bed especially easy. Our tip: pop into your local IKEA store and try a few out. We can advise you while you're there – provided you don't drop off on one of our comfy beds first.

Can I put any mattress on a divan bed?

In principle, yes – the size has to match, of course, and the mattress shouldn't slide around on the base. A foam mattress will work too, but you'll miss out on that characteristic springy interplay. A divan bed really comes into its own with a pocket-sprung mattress: the pocket springs in the mattress and the springs in the base complement each other beautifully and give you that classic, double-sprung feel. Just as important as the type of mattress is the firmness – that depends on your weight, your height and the way you like to sleep. Get advice in your local IKEA store or try our sleep comfort guide online: a good match between base, mattress and sleeper makes all the difference.

Is a divan bed good for your back?

Many people find a divan bed wonderfully relieving to lie on – the pocket springs adapt to the shape of your body and spread your weight evenly across the whole surface. Whether a divan bed is the right choice for your personal situation depends on lots of individual factors, though: sleeping position, any existing complaints and body type all play a part. If you have any health issues or suffer from back pain, do seek medical advice before you buy. What we can recommend: come into your local IKEA store and have a lie-down – a proper try gives you a first sense of whether your chosen bed really suits you.
