How high should a desk be?

The standard height for a computer desk is between 50-70 cm. Within this range, most people should be able to find a height that fits.

Depending on how tall you are, and what kind of desk chair you use, you can determine which height is most comfortable for you. A few general guidelines for a good desk height are:

  • When sitting down, the desk should reach up to your elbows. You should be able to comfortably rest your arms on the surface in a roughly 90-degree angle.
  • Underneath the desk, you should have roughly 35-40 cm from the top of your knees to the bottom of the desk. And from the bottom of the desk to the floor it should be roughly 60 cm.
  • Remember that your height and your sitting position might influence your optimal desk height, but since ergonomics can go a long way in supporting your body and warding off fatigue, it’s worth spending a little time on.
  • Try sitting by a desk or dinner table and measure the height to make a calculated choice.

What type of desks can I find at IKEA?

Everyone’s work, hobby and study is slightly different. Our desks reflects that very diversity, designed for different needs and preferences. At IKEA you’ll find gaming desks optimized for a gamer set-up, ergonomic office desks, space-saving corner desks and everything in between.

Small, folding or ladder desks

Many of our desks are height-adjustable, meaning you can switch between standing and sitting throughout the day. Others desks have collapsible table tops, allowing you to adjust the surface space if your project gets messy with papers and stationery. Small desks for children are designed to inspire creativity and help with homework, while storage desks with drawers make organizing a breeze.

From rustic wood to glossy white, there’s a desk for every style, purpose and project. Productivity has never felt more comfortable.

Which desk or computer desk should you choose for your home?

Not much room for a desk? Try a folding desk with a drop-leaf tabletop to save space. Need more storage? Take a look at desks with built-in shelves. If you’re working from home, measure the area you’ll use as your office—whether it’s a corner of the living room, a bedroom, or even the balcony—and pick a desk that fits your space (for one or more screens) and your storage needs.

If you want an aesthetic desk with built-in storage, decide if you need it on one side—like our MICKE desk, which also has a smart cable outlet for your computer—or on both sides. Would you add extra storage with a HEMNES front module? Prefer a desk and shelving combination to divide your space? Check out our KALLAX shelves. Or maybe you simply want a tabletop with legs, so you can add drawer units underneath.

Can you use a work table in small spaces?

Of course! You’ll find compact, folding, or vertical storage desks to make the most of every inch. Use trays and boxes to organise your area, and keep your surface clear so you can move easily.

Discover the versatility of our folding desks

The perfect solution for maximising space at home: our innovative folding desks are designed for modern living and smaller spaces. With IKEA’s signature quality and durability, you can enjoy a practical and stylish folding desk that looks great too.

Use it for work, study, or as a creative corner for your hobbies. Thanks to their smart design, our folding desks adapt to your needs. When you’re done, simply fold it away to free up space for relaxing.

Computer desks in wood, glass, and for every budget

Already know what style of desk you need for your computer? At IKEA, you’ll find modern, romantic, functional, and Nordic-inspired designs. If you’re after a specific material—like glass, metal, or solid wood—you’ll discover a wide range to choose from, all within your budget. Take a look at our wooden desks.

Easily pair your favourite desk with an office chair or an affordable gaming chair, as well as drawer units if your chosen desk doesn’t include storage. Visit one of our stores and get inspired by our desk and office furniture combinations. And don’t forget to match it with a great desk chair!
