New baby essentials for sleeping

Deep, restorative sleep is very important for newborns, since they spend up to 20 hours a day sleeping. That’s why we’re also starting this guide off with safe cots, cosy textiles for your baby’s cot, baby furniture and much more besides that you can use to transform your baby’s room into an oasis for sleep.

Baby cot/cradle

For a guaranteed good night’s sleep for your baby, a cot is ideal. IKEA cots are tested in line with the world’s strictest standards. This means, for example, that all of the corners are rounded off, the cot slats are spaced at an ideal distance from one another, and all materials used pose no danger to your child. As well as safety, functionality is of course another vital element. Our cots include practical storage systems, so that not only will you be able to provide your baby with an ideal place to sleep, but you’ll also have everything you need immediately to hand – from your baby’s rattle to their soft toys.

Baby mattress

To ensure your baby is able to sleep safe and sound, you should also look out for the right IKEA baby mattress for your IKEA cot. This could be, for example, a spring mattress or foam mattress. Spring mattresses prevent moisture from building up and are ideally ventilated. Foam mattresses not only offer excellent support; they also retain heat more effectively. In Children’s IKEA, we’ll gladly support you in your search for the right mattress. No matter which mattress you go for in the end: IKEA mattress covers are washable, and a mattress topper offers an additional level of protection.

Baby bedding items

A well-made, safe bed and a comfortable and supportive mattress are the first thing you need. The next is the right baby bedding items. Once you’ve got your cot, what do you need to put in it? For the first year of a baby’s life, a cosy baby sleeping bag is ideal. This could also be soft baby linens made of cotton. At IKEA, you’ll find a variety of bedding items which are wonderfully cosy and match our baby furniture really well. And waterproof mattress protectors and bumper pads will give you even more peace of mind. The mattress protector in case of little accidents, and the bumper pads to stop your little one from bumping against the edge of the bed (in spite of the rounded corners).

Comfort blanket

A comfort blanket often plays an important role for babies. It smells of mum and dad and familiar surroundings, giving your baby a real sense of security. But a comfort blanket doesn’t have to be a blanket necessarily. It could also be a soft toy. What’s important is that you let your baby pick out their own comfort blanket. Your baby knows best and intuitively which comfort blanket they would most like to have. Simply get a couple of different options. With time, your baby will pick out a favourite (usually between the ages of five months and one year old).

Night light

For your baby’s night light, you should choose a gentle light that is not too bright. As newborns, babies haven’t developed a fear of the dark yet – but you might find a night light helpful if you have to go into your baby’s room at night while it’s dark out. Once your baby gets a little older, the night light will give them a greater sense of security.

New baby essentials for changing and care

Changing, bathing and care for your baby in general will take up a lot of your time.

Changing table

A key element for the daily care of your baby. In addition to a changing table, a soft, comfortable and easy-to-clean changing mat makes changing nappies much easier. Some changing tables even grow with your child, and can be used as a chest of drawers, games table or writing desk once your child grows out of nappies.

Baby bath

Most babies love baths, or learn to love them very quickly. With the IKEA baby bath, bathtime is not only fun, but also safe. Anti-slip protection under the base will keep the bathtub stable, while soft anti-slip protection on the inside will stop your baby from slipping in the bath. The bath is made of the same safe plastic that you would find in baby bottles and nappies. What’s still missing? Cosy, cute towels for your little treasure. At IKEA you’ll find soft, absorbent towels made entirely from sustainably sourced cotton.

New baby essentials for storage

Nappies, toys, clothes and many other things besides all have to be stored away somewhere. And this is where our storage solutions come into play. Changing tables with shelves and drawers can also be used as a chest of drawers. With your baby bed, you can get a bed with storage built in – this will save you space and give you a place to store your baby’s things. Chests of drawers for children and wardrobes for children provide additional storage. With the wardrobes in particular, it is well worth buying something a little bigger than what you think you need, so that you still have enough room for your baby’s things as they get older. After all, children grow up quickly – and their clothes with them. For shelves, chests of drawers and cupboards, you can also use our storage boxes. These will ensure your baby’s room looks nice and organised – even if you end up having to store a lot of little bits and pieces in them. A little tip: there are also storage solutions that you can hang on the wall. This way, you’re not wasting any of the available space in the room.

New baby essentials for play

Babies learn through fun and games. So you’ll also find appropriate toys of all kinds from us. Soft toys, bright baby toys, an attractive mobile, a large play mat (especially if the floor of your baby’s room is furnished with cold laminate), a relaxing bouncer and a fun rattle. Variety is key. The more you offer your baby, the more they’ll be able to look at, reach for, understand and play with.
