What is terry towelling?

Terry towelling refers to textiles with a distinctive surface made up of small loops. This weave makes towels especially absorbent and pleasantly soft. Terry towelling includes hand towels, bath towels, shower towels, flannels and bath sheets. Compared to smooth fabrics, terry feels particularly cosy against the skin.

How can I tell if a towel is good quality?

There are several things to look out for. Material matters most: cotton towels with a dense weave are especially absorbent and long-lasting. It's also worth checking the weight per square metre – a higher gsm means more volume and absorbency. Good towels feel soft, have neatly finished edges and hold their shape after many washes.

How often should I change my towels?

Regular changes are important for good hygiene. Shower towels should be changed after three to four uses. Guest towels are best changed after every visit. Flannels deserve a fresh one every day, as they come into close contact with the skin. In damp bathrooms towels dry more slowly – so changing them more frequently is worthwhile. A tall bathroom cabinet or a large storage basket is a handy place to keep spare towels within easy reach.

How many towels or towel sets should I own?

Per person, four to six shower towels is a good number, so there are always fresh ones ready while others are in the wash. Add two to four guest towels for visitors and a few flannels. Towel sets make it easy to get the basics together and keep the bathroom looking coordinated.

How do I keep towels soft and fluffy?

To keep your towels soft for longer, skip the fabric softener. It coats the fibres and reduces absorbency. Our tip: add a splash of vinegar (no more than 30 to 60 ml) to the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine instead. It keeps towels soft, preserves colour vibrancy and helps keep your machine free of limescale at the same time. One important note: use only clear table vinegar with a maximum acidity of 5%, not concentrated vinegar essence and not fruit or apple cider vinegar. High-strength vinegar can damage the rubber seals and hoses in your machine. For synthetic or delicate regenerated fibres, always check the care label before using vinegar. Tumble drying also keeps towels fluffy. Alternatively, give them a good shake before hanging them up.

How do I wash terry towels properly?

Wash your towels at 60 degrees to remove bacteria reliably. Light-coloured towels can handle a 90-degree wash. Always sort by colour before each wash. It's also a good idea to wash new towels before using them for the first time – this removes any residue from production and improves absorbency. Spin at a medium speed to protect the fibres.
