The idea with KNIXHULT was to make a lamp with a minimal environmental footprint. By letting bamboo, that otherwise would be discarded, enhance the lamp’s expression, we harness the plant more than twice as much.

Product details

Gives a soft glowing light, that gives your home a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Each lamp is unique since it is made of bamboo with natural colour variations and is hand-woven by skilled craftspeople.

When we developed the KNIXHULT lamp series, we let parts of the bamboo plant, that otherwise would be discarded, become part of the expression ― meaning we harness each plant more than twice as much.

Loved bigger floor version, this isn't quite rightJenLike the idea but because so small will move from the weight of the cord, and the shade is a bit finicky if you go to 'hold' it when clicking on (to prevent it moving or falling over). There used to be a big version - sure it looked a bit like an awkward bin flipped over when you grabbed from the light dept, but it was great / size and addressed these issues with a step switch, big enough to hold its own in a corner, and also better bulb to shade ratio lighting. 3
Lovely lampRenaReally adds a nice soft glow to the room. Great quality.5
Flimsy, cord too heavy ChanelleI love IKEA but this is the worst thing I've ever purchased from IKEA. It is flimsy, falls over whenever you switch it on, terrible design. I've actually removed the middle, turned it upside down and it's now a plant holder!!1

Gorgeous soft lightAnneSimple lamp that throws pattern onto walls and creates a calming effect. I bought the clear bulb pictured on the website as a must have. Too glary for my eyes. I will buy the opal globes mentioned on the website. IKEA that information is confusing.5
Great ambience for eveningsMerylLove it. Bought it last year with the LED bulb so it provides a lovely range of light for the room. However, was a bit hard to set up.5
Just the right lightCharlesGives off just the right amount of mood lighting for a chill-out space. Not good for read or building flat pack IKEA furniture, but defuse light for winding down at the end of the evening.5

Lovely ambient lightingCorneliaThis lamp emits the most beautiful warm light. I wish I have bought two of these. The lamp is very well packaged and easy to set up.5
Table lampAnneI’m not totally living these lamps as the shades are quite heavily woven and the resulting light isn’t as bright as I’d hoped. Legs are quite flimsy.3

Lovely lamp!Anonymous reviewerThe material gives a beautiful pattern in the light, it's very cosy. The only minor downside is that the lamp material is so lightweight that it easily moves when you turn it on, but that's ok. Highly recommend it, gives a great atmosphere.4

KNIXHULT Table lamp, bamboo/handmade

From waste to mood lighting

The KNIXHULT lamp series is made of bamboo and is a small but important step towards our goal of having 100% circular products by 2030. But what does circular actually mean? Among other things, we are to only use recycled or renewable materials, and that all of our products are recyclable. To better understand what it means for a bamboo lamp, we travelled to Vietnam and studied the entire process from growing to weaving. The result – KNIXHULT.

It was with a supplier in Vietnam that product developer Anna Granath and the team realised that less than 20% of the bamboo plant is used when weaving home furnishings. The rest is sorted to be used as fuel. "Often, there is nothing wrong with the quality, the sorted bamboo just has minor colour variations", says Anna, who found those variations interesting. "We took a pile of discarded bamboo for test weaving and the result was so beautiful and genuine. It became even more beautiful when the skilled craftspeople at our weaving centre took over".

Easy to recycle

On site in Vietnam, Anna and the team could also adapt the lamp's construction. Not only for it to take up limited space during transport, but for it to be easy to take apart when it’s time for recycling. "The bamboo lamp shade is treated with a water-based lacquer and should be sorted separately, while the cord and lamp holder should be sorted as electrical waste", says Anna. "But before being recycled, of course it will have provided beautiful lighting for many years".

Looking after the earth's resources

For Anna, KNIXHULT became something more than a lamp with nice lighting. The whole project gave her a useful insight. "I think we all need to see the earth's resources with new eyes and question why some of it is seen as waste. KNIXHULT is a small step in the right direction. By allowing a natural expression to shine, we can use 65% of bamboo instead of just 20%."

Material

What is bamboo?

Strong, flexible and one of the world's fastest growing plants – bamboo has many uses that make it an excellent renewable material. It’s a type of grass and usually grows without the need for fertilizers or irrigation. After being harvested, it grows new shoots that are ready for harvesting after 4-6 years. At IKEA we use bamboo for items like furniture, bathroom decor, baskets and lamps – and we are constantly exploring more areas of use for this versatile material.

Designer thoughts

Designer thoughts

"The idea with KNIXHULT was to make a lamp with a minimal environmental footprint. That’s why we chose bamboo – a carbon-positive material which removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it adds. At the factory, we discovered that bamboo with darker colour tones was discarded, so we made a pattern that allows for greater variation. I'm glad we've used a carbon-positive material, harnessed more raw material and made a natural-looking lamp that lasts a long time."
