Glue the hooks in placeDevonThe shade falls off the hooks really easily if the lamp is brushed against. The students in my class constantly made the shade fall off that I eventually super glued it on.3

Not surprised but disappointed CourtneyThis lamp is easy to set up but it's not durable or sturdy the lamp shade falls off and so do the bars that hold the lampshade on they don't stay on and it's tough when it comes out of the box to wrap the lampshade around itself to clamp it's just not convenient if you're looking for something easy and less stress1

Hopeless, disappointing IKEA purchase; DO NOT BUYPhilThe lamp shade is the problem here. The instructions offer little help as far as how to assemble the shade itself. No matter what we did, it would not stay together until we gave up and taped it. The process of assembly created creases which, in addition to the tape, are very obvious once the light turns on. It looks terrible, and the lampshade will not stay round. Before this purchase I couldn’t imagine buying an article from IKEA for $7.99 and bringing it home to find it just doesn’t work right. My pillows are comfortable, my clock never runs slow, but this lamp has a totally flawed design. I would try to talk anyone out of buying it if I saw it in their cart. I am so embarrassed that all I can do is throw this product in the trash, because it is such a waste!1
Neat EvalynnThis lamp is so neat! Having grown up as a child of a lifer IKEA employee, I have seen many iterations of IKEA's skill with flat-packing items. This lamp is no exception, as it even comes with the shade craftily rolled into this box as well. I quite enjoyed watching my husband put this lamp together in no time at all, and it was on sale for only $7.99! The price cannot be beat, for a couple of academics who may be forced to move for awhile yet, but really, really needed a lamp. I may purchase another soon. If I am lucky, we will be able to unscrew this and take it with us when we move again, too.5

Affordable but flimsy Minimalist LampLindaPrice was definitely right, & as a minimalist, I found it amazing that an entire pole lamp could come packed in a compact 14-inch x 3-inch box. Assembly was straightforward, but the overall quality leaves a lot to be desired. To put it mildly, this lamp is flimsy. I’d strongly recommend placing it in an area where there are no children or pets, as it doesn’t seem like it could withstand much movement or accidental bumps. The lamp shade is particularly problematic. The three prongs meant to hold it in place sag easily and fall off with even minor adjustments. I ended up having to tape the prongs to the base just to keep them in place. As for the shade itself, it was difficult to assemble, and I had to tape that together as well. Despite all the taping, any slight adjustment causes the shade and prongs to come apart again. In short, while the price and minimalist design are appealing, the overall hassle of keeping this lamp functional makes it feel like more trouble than it’s worth.1

Story

Big design in a small package

Every now and then you need to think outside the famous box to achieve something innovative. But, when we developed BARLAST lamp, we instead stayed inside the box. The goal was a really good lamp at a really good price, and that made the packaging a decisive starting point. From there, we worked our way backwards with materials and design.

Cecilia Sondell Banke, one of our product engineers involved in the work with BARLAST, explains why the packaging can be so crucial for the price: “Transportation is often an essential part of the product cost. By packing the lamp efficiently, we avoid transporting air, and the total cost becomes lower.”

Cross-shape creates stability

When the assembled lamp stands next to the packaging, it can be hard to see how it can fit there at all. A part of the explanation is the cross-shaped base. “We realised that we could make a cross instead of a round base – both to save material and to make the lamp dividable. The cross also adds a unique design element.” The lampshade is made of soft plastic and rolled up like a tube in the packaging. When mounted on the lamp base, it spreads the light both evenly and beautifully.

Low price challenges creativity

A lower price must never mean compromises with quality. To secure stability and that BARLAST fulfils all legal demands, we made thorough calculations and tough tests. “The products with the lowest price are often the most challenging to develop. All our specialists need to be onboard from the start, and we have to think through the whole process step by step. But, they are also very creative projects that we learn a lot from. And when it comes to BARLAST it resulted in a really nice lamp in a small package,” Cecilia sums up.

Big design in a small package

Wonder how BARLAST can fit in that small package? Well, that’s quite a reasonable question. A part of the explanation is the cross-shaped lamp base, which makes it dividable, along with the lampshade that is rolled-up like a tube. When the package takes up little space and can be transported efficiently which makes the cost and the price become lower. It also makes it easier for you to bring your lamp home where it can spread an even and beautiful light in the room.
