What is the best layout for a sofa in the living room?

Step-by-step guide to finding the best sofa layout for your living room

  1. Create a floor plan of your space
Measure the room and draw a to-scale floor plan. This helps you understand the size of the space and how much room your sofa can take up. Take into account radiators, walking paths, and windows or doors that need to open.
  2. Think about how you’ll use the sofa
Will it be for watching TV, reading, relaxing, or entertaining guests? The function of the sofa influences its size and the direction it should face (for example, towards the TV, fireplace, or window).
  3. Decide what type of sofa you want
The layout of your sofa is important too. Will you go for a straight sofa, a corner sofa, a modular sofa, or multiple sofas? With or without armrests? For extra convenience, consider a sofa with storage or a sleeping function, such as a sofa bed.

What types of sofa layouts are there?

There are several sofa layouts to choose from. The right layout depends on the shape and size of your living room. Do you want a cosy seating area, an open and airy feel, or a space to chill with friends? Choose the layout that best suits your space and how you use it.

Free-standing in the room

The sofa is placed away from the walls, freely in the room. This layout is usually only possible in larger living rooms and creates an open, spacious feel.

Against the wall

Place your sofa directly against a wall — often used in narrow living rooms. If you have enough space, leave 20–30 cm between the sofa and the wall and add a wall shelf in between. Use it for decoration or lighting.

Facing each other

If your sofa is mainly for conversation or entertaining guests, place two sofas directly opposite each other with a coffee table in between. This layout creates symmetry and balance in the room.

L-shaped layout (corner layout)

An L-shaped layout creates a cosy seating area with a view of the TV or fireplace. You can use one corner sofa or two straight sofas. It offers plenty of seating without taking up too much space.

U-shaped layout

Using three sofas or a modular sofa, you can create a U-shaped layout for maximum seating comfort. Perfect for large families or if you often have guests. Just note that this layout only works well in spacious rooms — in smaller spaces, it can feel cramped.

Left-hand corner sofa or right-hand corner sofa?

Not sure whether you need a left-hand or right-hand corner sofa? Here’s a handy trick to make sure you always choose the right one. The corner is always determined from the front of the sofa – so when you're standing in front of it, not sitting on it.

A left-hand corner sofa means the corner is on the left when you're facing the sofa. A right-hand corner sofa means the corner is on the right when you're facing it. It’s that simple.
