Step 1: Check and assess your kitchen
IKEA has had two systems over the years: FAKTUM until 2013, and our current system is METOD. METOD components do not fit FAKTUM. There are a few ways to identify which system you have:
How to recognize a METOD kitchen
- Measure the cabinet: a METOD base cabinet is 80 cm high (without legs or worktop). An older FAKTUM system is 70 cm high.
- Measure the plinth: METOD 8 or 11.4 cm, FAKTUM 16 or 21 cm
Step 2: see whether you want to change your kitchen layout
If you’re updating your kitchen, you can immediately make it suit your preferences better. An extra cabinet, or reorganizing your cabinet with drawers instead of a door – it’s all possible.
The layout of your kitchen
- Look at what you currently don’t like — illogically arranged cabinets or an appliance in an inconvenient spot? Write down all your wishes and needs so you know exactly what you want to change.
- Pay attention to water and power connections, as these determine which adjustments are possible.
- Use our kitchen planner for inspiration, or make a simple sketch of your current kitchen. This gives you a clear overview and makes it easy to share with a kitchen specialist.
Work zones
Also think about your current work zones and, if needed, how you would ideally arrange them.
To use your kitchen as efficiently as possible, it’s helpful to divide it into three work zones:
- Storage: fridge / freezer / pantry
- Washing: sink / dishwasher
- Cooking: oven / hob

Adjusting your base cabinets
With METOD cabinets, you can easily modify the configuration
Adapt your base cabinets to your new needs with ease. Thanks to our shelves and drawers, which fit into all METOD cabinets, you can easily reorganize the inside of your cabinets. A cabinet can have one or multiple doors, drawers, or shelves.
Adjusting your wall cabinets
Just like with the base cabinets, you can optimize your METOD wall cabinets by adding shelves and drawers to the cabinets that are suitable for them.
If you have the space, this is the perfect moment to add extra wall cabinets for more storage. You can also install open wall cabinets.
You can place your appliances (microwave, extractor hood…) inside your wall cabinets. Always check that the dimensions fit.
