How to choose the right vase for your flowers

Have you received a beautiful bouquet of flowers and are looking for the perfect vase? Or perhaps you're wondering which flowers best suit your new vase? At IKEA, you'll find the right vase for every flower and every bouquet, big or small. The rule of thumb is: choose a vase that is about one-third to half the height of your flowers.

Tall vase with narrow opening

Most flowers or bouquets with long stems look best in a tall vase with a narrow opening. For example, field bouquets, lilies, gladioli, or roses. This way, the bouquet doesn't fall apart too much and the stems stay upright. Even if you want to place a single flower in a vase, a tall, narrow vase is the right choice. At IKEA, we even have a vase with a metal lid with a hole in it. Insert your single flower here, and it will stay perfectly upright. Ideal.

Vase with an hourglass shape

Classic bouquets feel most at home in an hourglass-shaped vase. In an hourglass-shaped vase, the stems have plenty of room to spread out, allowing the flowers and leaves to open beautifully. Wide bouquets feel most at home in a wide vase.

Wide vase with narrow opening

A wide vase with a narrow opening is perfect for placing a large branch or multiple branches. To ensure the vase doesn't tip over, choose a heavy vase made of thick glass. Fill the vase with some water to make sure it stays upright.

Low vases and decorative bowls

If you have flowers with a heavy flower head, such as a sunflower, dahlia, peony, or hydrangea, you can also place them in a low vase. Cut the stems so that the flower head just hangs over the edge of the vase and the stem still touches the water. It can also be nice to let your flowers float in a decorative bowl. For this, cut the flower heads a bit shorter.

Small vases

If you want to display single flowers, it's fun to do this in various small vases. At IKEA, you'll find all kinds of small vases in different shapes and colours. Choose the vases that match your flowers and style, and arrange them nicely together.
