KLTV Tennis Club – A clubhouse with lots and lots of storage space

From a mood board with a few cushions to a complete renovation — KLTV Tennis Club in Krommenie went all in. ‘The interior design advice from IKEA for Business brought peace of mind. This was exactly it.’ Read the interview with Esther van Kuik.

The assignment: To furnish the renovated clubhouse with a refreshed interior where atmosphere and functionality take center stage. A warm and homely space suitable for many different types of use, such as the boardroom, bar, canteen, changing rooms, and storage. With enough room for 60 seats, it also comfortably accommodates larger groups

Client: KLTV Tennis Club

What they do: As a tennis club, they welcome around 900 members — both on the tennis courts and the newly added padel courts.

Location: Krommenie

IKEA is, of course, an expert at creating smart storage solutions.

Why did you decide to redesign the clubhouse?

‘The idea was to brighten up the canteen a bit, with some cushions and a fresh coat of paint. By then we had collected a colourful mix of chairs and sofas, and we were looking for more calm and unity. But it quickly became clear that a few cushions wouldn’t cut it. On top of that, the club had grown from 500 to 900 members thanks to the new padel courts. Extra seating was really needed. The more closely we looked, the more there was to do. Moving the bar to create more space, installing a new floor, replacing the electrical system — it just didn’t stop.'

What kind of challenges does that bring for a club?

‘Where do I start? There were quite a few. First, we needed approval from the members, because a renovation costs money. That took some effort, but eventually we got the green light. Then you have to take everyone’s wishes into account — from seniors to young players. You don’t put an 80‑year‑old on a bar stool, the youth wanted long rectangular tables that can easily be pushed together, and the board needs a place to meet. And keep in mind, we were just four volunteers: our chairman Mark, his wife Esther, Symone, and me. We did this renovation “on the side”.'

How did you end up choosing IKEA for Business?

‘One of our members knew someone who worked there. We started talking and discovered that this was exactly what we needed.’

How did you get started?

‘For the intake, two people from IKEA came by. They took photos, measured everything, and wrote down all our wishes, such as extra seating and a lot of storage space. Do you know how many little ‘bits and pieces’ we have here? And this is exactly where IKEA excels: organising small spaces efficiently and creating good storage solutions. When they finally presented the interior plan, it brought a sense of calm. This was exactly what we needed.’

Can you give an example of something you were really happy with?

‘Take our outdoor lounge cushions. They were always stacked somewhere in the canteen. Very messy. IKEA came up with a beautiful custom solution for that. Or think about lighting. There are lamps hanging above every table, but those lamps need to be moved during parties – when everything is pushed aside. They had perfect ideas for that too.'

We received an incredible amount of wonderful compliments.

And you assembled everything yourselves?

‘Absolutely! It was a true military operation, led by Symone. In total we had ordered around 70 chairs, stools and bar stools, 17 rectangular tables, 3 round tables and of course the huge custom wall cabinets. Everything was delivered within two days. But yes, every shelf comes in its own package. That means: sort carefully! Luckily, IKEA came by to check the entire delivery. Then a group of volunteers arrived to assemble and paint everything. No one was allowed to just grab boxes or packages — everything went in an organised flow according to our self‑designed system. Within a day and a half, everything was assembled.’

How long did the entire renovation take you?

‘From the first mood board to the official opening took a year and a half. And in the final two months, when we really started working on the interior, we spent every Thursday – the whole day! – at IKEA: trying out chairs, putting furniture together, moving everything around, taking photos, finding solutions for questions from the contractor. Fortunately, someone from IKEA for Business was always available to think along with us. But it took a lot of time. Sometimes we’d get calls from home: are you still there?’

The collaboration with IKEA for Business was excellent. It’s an incredibly dedicated team; they even attended the festive opening

What was most valuable for you?

‘IKEA knows what they’re doing. They know exactly how much space you need between tables and chairs to design a room properly. They also know which chairs are vandal‑proof, and they were able to reassure us when we suddenly panicked about the colours. The team had drawn up everything with a purpose. Some pieces of furniture we would never have chosen ourselves, but IKEA could explain every choice. If we couldn’t figure something out, we followed their advice. That turned out well every single time. We ended up adopting almost everything — including the yellow and green colours, which are quite bold!’
