What types of leather does IKEA use?
We use two types of leather for our leather products, namely grain leather and split leather.
Most hides aren’t suitable for furniture due to their thickness. Those hides have to be split into two layers. The top layer becomes grain leather and the bottom layer becomes split leather.
Grain leather is softer and stronger. That’s why we use this type of leather for surfaces that are used intensively like seats, backrests and armrests.
Split leather is used for all the other surfaces. We also use ‘coated fabric’ (artificial leather) for these surfaces.
