How is the load-bearing capacity of IKEA products tested?
IKEA stands for quality. We want you to be able to use our products for as long as possible without problems. That's why all IKEA products are tested according to the applicable standards for furniture. We can tell you that our products are good for the purpose for which they are designed. This means, for example, that a closet is tested as a closet and not as a bookcase.
These guidelines include tests that deal with load-bearing capacity, and are aimed at the normal use of the furniture. In many cases this comes down to European or international regulations regarding product safety. National laws, including the Dutch, are also taken into account. In some cases, we find that the existing regulations are not sufficient and we perform heavier tests.
For a number of articles we do indicate a maximum load. You can find this online with the product under the tab product information. When a maximum load is mentioned on a bookcase or shelf, this applies to each shelf.
