What is the minimum ceiling height for mounting a PAX wardrobe?

For our latest generation PAX, released in the Netherlands in April 2024, the space required for assembly is smaller than ever. For older PAX generations (or if you're unsure which one you have), allow for more space; see 'Older PAX generations'. Our current PAX wardrobes are much easier to assemble than before and can be assembled standing up.

In our stores and on our website, you will only find the latest generation PAX wardrobes*.

You can easily recognize the current PAX generation by its foldable base elements, with the back panel already attached. Except for the extension part for the corner unit**.

The current PAX generation

PAX 201 cm high - Without doors - Minimum ceiling height of 201 cm
PAX 236 cm high - Without doors - Minimum ceiling height of 237 cm

Note: We don't count the extra centimeter because you still need to assemble parts from above, but this is the minimum margin between the wardrobe and the ceiling that IKEA recommends. When inserting the top shelf at an angle, the shelf will also protrude slightly above the wardrobe.

PAX 201 cm high - With hinged doors - Minimum ceiling height of 202 cm
PAX 236 cm high - With hinged doors - Minimum ceiling height of 237 cm

Note: When measuring, also consider the reach of the doors when you open them. A ceiling lamp or beam in front of your wardrobe can otherwise prevent your doors from opening fully.

PAX 201 cm high - With sliding doors - Minimum ceiling height of 205 cm
PAX 236 cm high - With sliding doors - Minimum ceiling height of 240 cm

Note: The rail on top of the wardrobe is only about 8 mm high, but you need some extra space to hang the doors on the rail.

** Are you building a corner wardrobe? The extension part for the corner is still easiest to assemble lying down if you have the space for it. This requires a ceiling height of ≥ 210 cm for a 201 cm high wardrobe, or ≥ 244 cm for a 236 cm high wardrobe. Is your ceiling only high enough for upright assembly? No problem, but we recommend assembling the corner part with someone else. You need to attach the back panel yourself with the supplied nails.

Older PAX generations
These wardrobes can be assembled both lying down and standing up. Lying down is easiest, but if you want to assemble your wardrobe lying down, you need a higher ceiling than when assembling it standing up. Standing assembly requires two people.

In the assembly manual, you will find instructions for both methods. We recommend assembling the wardrobe lying down if you have the space for it. Below you will find the required ceiling height for the different assembly options and wardrobe sizes.
