IKEA receives three RED DOT Awards 2018 for Product Design

Red Dot Award, founded in Germany in 1955, is one of the top 3 internationally renowned design awards that recognizes outstanding design work in a wide range of categories including automobiles, architecture, household and home electronics, fashion, and medicine. In the Product Design competition of the Red Dot Award, Red Dot reviews the design of products in 48 different categories. This year, submissions from 59 countries were received and the products entered were assessed individually by an independent and international jury of experts.
DELAKTIG is created by a collaborative effort between IKEA and Tom Dixon, a world-renowned designer. They came together to create a completely open-sourced, and customizable sofa platform that is versatile enough for small space living situations. Especially, it allows the customers to customize their sofas with adaptable backrests, armrests, covers, and side table units. With sustainability in mind, it is made with recycled aluminum material.
FREKVENS is a party collection designed by IKEA in collaboration with Teenage Engineering, a Swedish consumer electronics company. This collection captures the young generation’s passion for music. The collection enables people to throw a cool party with this collection. The collection includes a Bluetooth speaker, a record player, party lighting, and more.
KUNGSBACKA is IKEA’s first sustainable kitchen fronts and is made by IKEA’s sustainability efforts and the supplier’s innovative technology. The KUNGSBACKA kitchen door fronts are produced by covering recycled wood with plastic foil from recycled PET bottles. The KUNGSBACKA kitchen is a more sustainable option without any compromise on quality, function, design or low price.
Marcus Engman, Head of Design at IKEA says, “We are really happy and proud that IKEA has received these Red Dot Awards. And they actually have something great in common. The 3 products were all created in collaboration from people outside of IKEA.” He added that “the result of the collaboration aimed at making better products for better everyday life of the many people shows that design can be bigger than just the design, and togetherness makes things better.”
The awards ceremony of 2018 Red Dot Award will be held in Red Dot Design Museum located in Essen, Germany, in July 2018.
