Results of survey conducted by IKEA Korea indicate growing needs for better sleep

[Seoul – August 12, 2019] Less than half of all Koreans are satisfied with their current bedrooms. While many consider the bedroom to be a space for good sleep, their satisfaction is largely influenced by other functional factors, including the size of the room and the overall efficiency in storage and organization.

Home furnishing retailer IKEA Korea and research agency Kantar Korea conducted surveys and interviews upon approximately 1,090 Korean adults between ages 20 and 55 living in Seoul and the greater metropolitan area. According to the results, only 45.8% of respondents are satisfied with their current bedroom.

The research was aimed at understanding the overall perception on bedroom and sleep among Koreans. The results will support IKEA Korea to offer various home furnishing ideas and inspirations, enabling the many to create a bedroom reflecting their personal needs for better sleep and a great wake-up.

Results showed that respondents spend an average of 8.3 hours in the bedroom on a weekday, and 9.5 hours on a weekend. Main reasons for their satisfaction with the current bedroom include: “simple and well-organised” state of the room (38.9%), comfortable bed (35.2%), and a de-cluttered space free of household goods (34.0%). Meanwhile, small space (26.5%) was considered the top factor of dislike about the bedroom; insufficient storage (24.0%) and absence of furniture for relaxation such as chairs (23.0%) were also mentioned as main factors.

Responses also showed a general growth in needs for better sleep, as many people are coming to appreciate the value of work and life balance, due to reduced working hours. On what defines “good sleep”, respondents described an undisturbed sleep, being able to wake up quickly in the morning and feeling refreshed. They also agreed that sleep has a considerable influence on their daily life and work, both psychologically and physically, and that unsatisfactory sleep can cause physical fatigue and interfere with their work and daily routines.

“Across all living situations we are seeing that there is a growing need for better sleep and a better everyday life among Koreans,” said IKEA Korea Commercial Manager Nicolas Johnsson, adding, “At IKEA, we will work to inspire and enable the many to achieve a healthy ‘work-life-sleep balance’ through great sleep, by creating a space where they can recharge and get ready for a great wake-up.”
