IKEA Sustainability Report FY18 released

Highlighting efforts towards making sustainable living more inspiring and affordable
Under the vision to “create a better everyday life for the many people,” IKEA puts effort into offering a wide range of well-designed, functional and sustainable home furnishings at low prices. To create a more sustainable and meaningful impact on the planet by 2030, IKEA is also making continuous efforts to fulfill the three focus areas of the IKEA People & Planet Positive Strategy: 1) Inspiring and enabling healthy and sustainable living, 2) Transforming IKEA into a circular and climate positive business and 3) Being fair and equal.
Key highlights and future initiatives of this year’s report include:
• Designing new products to be repurposed, repaired, reused, resold or recycled
• Aim to use 100% renewable and recycled material in IKEA range by 2030 (as of FY18, 60% is based on renewable materials and 10% contains recycled materials)
• Sourcing 100% of cotton and 85% of wood from sustainable sources
• Aim to phase out all single-use plastic products from IKEA stores and restaurants from January 2020
• Business operating on 74% renewable energy with aims for 100% use by 2020
• Reducing food waste in its operations by 50% by 2020, saving 1,400 tonnes of food waste, equivalent to 3 million meals since the start of ’Food is Precious’ initiative in late 2016
• Launching veggie-based hotdog globally which has 85% smaller climate footprint than normal hotdogs
• Building diversity and gender equality at all levels across all IKEA business
• Securing fair and equal working conditions throughout the value chains for all suppliers

IKEA Goyang have earned a “Very Good” rating by BREEAM, a British sustainability assessment method for buildings. All of its new stores will also be committed to the same efforts towards sustainability. The company is also dedicated to expanding renewable energy use by taking part in the launch of the Right of Choice for RE Initiative in November 2018. IKEA Korea has continued various activities to become a good neighbour in the local community in its efforts towards creating an inclusive and fair society that brings happiness for the many more people.
