Ilyas’s story

Transforming hardship into hope

When conflict forced Ilyas to flee Mali, his life changed overnight. In Burkina Faso, he found safety - and a new mission. Serving his own community by joining UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, Ilyas turned loss into leadership, and he now works to bring hope to others.

Turning pain into purpose

When conflict erupted in Mali, Ilyas’s life changed overnight. “Being forced to flee your country is a painful and devastating experience,” he says. “It means leaving everything behind - your home, your bearings, your loved ones, sometimes even your dignity.”

From refugee to humanitarian

Ilyas found safety in Burkina Faso, and it was there that his humanitarian career began. “I served my own refugee community with commitment and dedication,” he recalls. In 2019, he began working with UNHCR. “This is much more than a job - it’s a life mission,” he says. “It’s the chance to give hope to those living through what I went through”.

Reigniting ambition

Conflict had interrupted Ilyas’s studies, but his new role reignited his ambitions. He earned a degree in Project and Program Management and enrolled in two master’s programs: one in Crisis Management and Humanitarian Action, and another in International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid. “This journey is about contributing more to the humanitarian sector,” he says.

A mission of hope

For Ilyas, every day at UNHCR is a chance to transform hardship into hope. “My experience, as difficult as it was, opened an unexpected path,” he reflects. “It drives me to serve with respect, empathy, and professionalism.”
